      Hello! Where I live the speed limit is right around 40 MPH, and with my mustang will it hurt the engine or fuel eco because I am constantly in between gears? Or should I just stick with fourth gear and about 2100 RPM, because fifth gear is 1000 to 900 RPM. This is a V8 car with a reman mengine from jasper if that changes anything. I dont want to cause any unnecessary ware to the engine, or lose fuel eco.

        Your Owners Manual should tell you the appropriate road speeds for the various gears, and the relevant shift points.

        I lifted the stock ’02 GT gear ratios from this site:

        1st – 3.37
        2nd – 1.99
        3rd – 1.33
        4th – 1.00
        5th – 0.67
        Rev. – 3.22

        Don’t use 5th at 40 MPH. It’s an overdrive gear and will probably “lug” the engine at that road speed, especially if you want to accelerate. 4th is a “direct” gear with a straight 1:1 ratio, and it may or may not be a good gear for continuous operation at 40 MPH. It depends on your engine’s torque curve, and whether the terrain is hilly or not.

        You, being the driver, will have the best input of what the correct gear should be for the conditions.

          looking into this there really is no perfect gear where I live “Tennessee” the constant up and down I guess I will just sick to 4th and ride 5th when I hit flat ground. torque curve and optimal shifting area looks to be 2k-3k for fuel eco and 1.5k RPM for constant operation but, as i said 2.1k and 900 to 1k I guess I should have did more research on the car before buying it in my area. another option is a gearing switch in the rear, but I don’t have the money for that right now. thanks for the info!
