You Tend To Specialize -ETCG1
The idea for You Tend To Specialize came to me while cleaning up the shop. I noticed that I tend to own and work on vehicles that I’m familiar with, Honda’s mostly. I don’t think I’m alone in this. I think a lot of technicians tend to specialize when it comes to repair work. Some are good at brakes and suspension, others diagnostic work. No matter what it seems that technicians like to stay in their ‘comfort zone’ when it comes to repairs and service. That’s not to say that you can’t come outside that comfort zone, it just means that you’re most effective working on the things you’re familiar with. There’s also the ‘tool factor’ to consider. Some repairs require special tools and if you worked on every system on a vehicle, you’d have a massive tool investment to contend with.
I think shops tend to specialize as well. I think it’s good business to do good work and if you’re known for a particular service, even other shops may send their work to you.
So what are your thoughts on specialization? Do yo tend to specialize, or do you like to work on everything?
