The Story of the Line Wrenches
When I was a kid, the thing to get dad for Christmas was tools. It was an easy choice. It seemed like dad had everything anyway. He had his workshop full of stuff. He had the garage. He’s the one you went to when you needed your bike fixed, or anything else in your life that was broken. Tools were always a good choice for a guy like that.
In a way, getting him tools for the holidays was like helping yourself. If you managed to get him the right tools, he just might end up using them to fix your stuff. Especially if you got him something he liked or needed.
One year when I was about 12 or so. Dad asked for a set of line wrenches for Christmas. At the time, I didn’t know what those were, but I wanted to get them for him.
For those of you not in the know, line wrenches are wrenches used to loosen fittings that hold lines together. Things like transmission lines, or brake lines. These wretches are designed to fit on more than just 2 sides of a fastener like an open ended wrench does. They wrap almost all the way around the fitting so that they don’t round it off.
With my newfound knowledge I went on a search for a set of line wrenches and I found some. Honestly, they were the most‘affordable’ set I could find. Which is a nice way of saying the cheapest set I could find. Hey, I was 12.
Christmas morning came and dad opened his new set of line wrenches. He didn’t seem that excited to see them, but he was grateful for the gift and thanked me for them.
Later, when I asked him about this, he said that with a tool like that, it was better to spend the extra money to get better quality tool. Cheep tools often let you down. It was an important lesson, and the next time I got dad tools, I made sure I got him the quality ones.
I’ve always found Craftsman tools to be of good quality, and also affordable. As a professional technician, I use tools all the time. I’d say at this point I know good tools. To this day I still use the Craftsman tools I have in my tool box. They’ve served me well for many years, and I feel they’re a great value.
When I was 12, we had catalogs to look through to find the tools we wanted to buy for dad. Today there’s something much better, the Craftsman Gift Finder. Here you can go and find whatever you want from Craftsman while also being able to select a budget that’s right for you. So if you’re 12, or 112, you can easily search out the perfect Craftsman gift that fits your budget. Technology is awesome.
While you’re at it, consider joining the Craftsman Club. It’s a cool place where tool junkies, and forgive me here, craftsman get together to show off the stuff they make. Who knows, you might just find a new use for line wrenches. If nothing else, it’s a place where like minded people can get together, share ideas, and talk about their tools.
Thanks for reading and happy holidays.
