The 5 Most Reliable Cars Under $3,000
Finding a decent vehicle that is cheap and easy to repair is a real struggle. There are loads of lists online about the most reliable car for under a certain amount of money. They seem to be just entirely made up and don’t really reflect the reality of owning a car. I see so many lists with incredibly unreliable vehicles that are impossible or expensive to repair. Normally the safe range for cheap used cars bottoms out around $2000 – $3000.
I’ve talked about this before, you can get more information on actually picking the car on these pages below. I would also encourage you to watch this video and get an idea of what to look for if you want to find a car that is not part of this list.

This list is for cars which are under $3000, are reliable, and are easy/cheap to repair if anything does break.
We get a lot of questions that are roughly; What are the best used cars to buy under 3000? Can you buy a reliable car for 3000? What is the cheapest, most reliable car? What is the best car for 3000?
Now, the price changes. It can go up a bit, it can go down slightly; but the idea is the same. Everyone wants a reasonable vehicle that can last for a long time and be repaired easily otherwise. There is probably some bias in this list because we tried to pick cars which have videos here on ETCG in case you do need to make any repairs.
Now that we’ve set out the criteria, these are our picks for the Top 5 Most Reliable Cars Under $3,000:
5. Subaru Outback
Lots of these are still out there driving around as if they came off the lot yesterday. A good choice just because in many cases it will still be running fine years later. Subaru is generally hit or miss on their vehicles. They don’t have the same consistent quality you get with Accords, Civics, and so on. But, these Subaru models can take a beating and still work fine later.
4. Lexus LS-400
No surprise that Lexus and Toyota are both featured in this list. Plenty of you in the forums know that even older and cheaper Toyotas can go for hundreds of thousands of miles. Despite being slightly fancier Toyotas these things are probably the hardest to get under $3000. It was also one of the biggest winners in 2008.
3. Honda Civic
Another pick any mechanic will be familiar with. The older Honda civics are still everywhere. Many of these vehicles get well over 200,000 miles. Hondas from this era were really built with a lot of care. The civic and the accord will probably be the two vehicles you will see most when shopping for a cheaper car. There are also huge amounts of resources, including this website, that go over how to repair them.
2. Honda Accord
Another Honda which should come as no surprise. Hondas and Toyotas share the long term reliability that makes them a great option for something cheap, reliable, and repairable. I’ve repaired a lot of accord and they seem to outlive some of their owners. A very good choice if you’re on a budget and don’t want to constantly spend money.
1. Toyota Camry
I’ve seen loads of Toyota Camries over 300,000 miles still running and have heard even more firsthand accounts here on our forum. They are very reliable machines and can be repaired relatively easily and cheaply thanks to how common older models are.
Conclusion
Any of these options might be perfect. A lot will depend on just what is available in your area and how long you are willing to shop.

What year Subaru engines have the head gasket problem? There are a LOT of Suburbs for sale here in the Pacific Northwest.
