Repairing Fuel Gauge Problems 2002 Mercury Marquis
Every once in a while you run into a fuel gauge that just doesn’t read correctly. When I run into this problem I usually go looking to the sending unit in the tank. I’ll admit that it’s not always effective but at least for me, the odds are good that’s where I’ll find the problem. In addition to that, I usually find that all I have to do is work the wiper arm and check the resistance and I find that’s all I need to do and it works again. That may not be the case for you but it’s at least worth a try since it doesn’t cost you anything. In addition to learning how to test a fuel sending unit you also get a look at what’s involved in removing the fuel pump in this vehicle. It’s good information should you find yourself in need of replacing a fuel pump on a full sized Ford like this. Here’s some useful links for you.

Before I pull the sending unit theres a really easy way to test the entire system except sender. Just unplug the wiring at fuel pump / sender assembly. With an open circuit the gauge should peg full. Then simply ground the sending wire – usually the yellow with white wire on most older models fords. Then the guage shoud peg to empty. If that happens you know all wiring and gauge conerns are ok and you can sell the customer sending unit. Then and only then do I pull the fuel pump sending unit from the tank. Just an easy way that I’ve always used. I am a 20 year Ford master mechanic. They also have gauge testers if you really want to test accuracy of gauge, but the open circuit and ground circuit usually is enough to correctly diagnose 99% of fuel gauge concerns.
