Hello all, I was driving home from work and had no issues with my 1988 accord. I went into neutral to stop at a light. When it turned green I had no gears except 3rd and 4th. There was no noise or other indication of a problem until then. The shift lever was very sloppy. 3rd gear is where 1st was and 4th is where second was. No reverse at all. The transmission was rebuilt professionally in 2015. It is however my 3rd trans since 2006. This is my commuter car so I’m not hard on it and have been driving a manual trans since I was 16. The engine has 300000 on it and a recent new head gasket and reworked head. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hopefully just a problem with the shift linkage, you can inspect that from under the car. Otherwise the tranny has an internal problem with the shift fork.

Thanks for the help. I’m gonna check the linkage today but my gut is telling me its internal like you said possibly a fork. Getting parts for a 30 year old car is tough.

You hit the nail on the head. somehow the bolt that holds the shift arm to the transmission linkage had come halfway out. The way the bolt was at an angle allowed 3rd and 4th without enough movement to move through the gears. Thanks again relative4
