Crown Victora engine oil cap mystery was created by cdavis188
Hey guys,

I have a 1990 Ford LTD Crown Victoria with Ford's venerable 302 Windsor V8 and about 150k miles on the clock.

The problem I have is with the engine oil cap.

My car has been leaking about a quart of oil about every 30-50 miles when you drive it, and there's a thick smell of burning oil when you shut off the car. When I got back from taking my Grandmother to the doctors a week ago, I topped off my oil but forgot to put the engine oil cap back on. A few days later, my Aunt drove downstate and back, about a 300 mile trip. When she got back, she reported that there was no smell of burnt oil at any point during her trip. I checked the dipstick and the oil was at the same exact level, and she said she added no oil, and that there was no oil stains underneath my car when she parked it. So my question is, can the engine oil cap being on cause an oil leak? And why would failing to put it back on cause the leak to seemingly dissappear?

This is a very confusing situation and I want to get it fixed ASAP.

Sincerely,

Chris

I would suggest you check the PCV.
It appears your building excessive pressure with in the crank case and forcing oil out the seals.
With the oil cap removed the engine can vent through the oil fill neck.
