I have done it on my 66 Dart but it wasn't connected to anything except two bolts. I'm new to engine work and I just got this 83 Fairmont Wagon without heat and I suspect it either has no thermostat or its stuck open. But its connected to belts and what not. I have the FSM so that tells me torque specs but noting else in this regard.

So can anyone give me a quick and dirty walk thru of how to change the thermostat on an 81 Fairmont including sizes of wrenches needed if you know?

Please and thank you.

Specifics on that vehicle I could not say off the top of my head, but...
A set of both SAE and metric sockets and wrenches would be the bare minimum along with screw driver and pry bar.
Be prepared to remove the fan cowling and possibly the radiator to get as much working room.
From the picture you posted:
That pump bracket will have to be removed to get access to the thermostat housing bolts.
