Hey guys so I have 2 issues with my mom’s car.

      2012 Chevrolet Cruze LS

So the first issue is when the car is up to temp if I put my head were the blue circle is in the picture. I get this burning plastic rubber smell. (My mother smelled it in the cabin when she has the AC on) (I was only able to smell it right above the transmission/oil filter)

The 2nd issue was the coolant level in the reservoir when hot the coolant would be fluctuating between those blue lines in the picture. When cold it was bone dry except for moisture in the reservoir. So I refilled it and the coolant level is currently where it is. The car has 90000 miles on it. I was not sure if it could have evaporated or what. I don’t see any leaks running around the hoses or radiator or around the thermostat housing or any of the hoses going into the reservoir. When I drove it the temps fluctuated between 190 and 220 on a 90 degree day. I wasn’t sure what the normal temperature for this car is so if anyone can tell me that to be much appreciated.

      Thanks in advance!

        As to the burning smell…
start with a good inspection of all hoses and belts.
Next look at the wiring for any signs of heat damage.
        As to the coolant level..
The fluid will evaporate over time ..this is normal due to the heating and cooling.
Same goes for the amount of fluid in the tank.
When hot, pressure allows the coolant to flow into the tank and as it cools it will draw it out of it.

I will definitely look at the wires. That’s what I thought with the coolant! Thanks I’ll post back after I check the wires.

My guess is you have a coolant leak on driver side of car. Pressure test the coolant system. This car is known for water pump failure and is on passenger side of car. Get car up to operating temp so coolant system is under pressure and you might see the leak. If you dont find leak at this point……..pressure test coolant system.

This is just a guess so proceed with CAUTION around a hot engine.

Check your water pump, as well as the driver side outlet with the thermostat heater. Both very common and I usually do atleast one a week.

Get me the last 8 of your vin and I will check of your car is still eligible for the special coverage on the water pump.

Thank you so much! I’ll stop by her house after work and get the Vin tomorrow. I’ll also check those places for leaks to.

No leaks and the smell is gone and the coolant level is holding so far. Upper hose was 194 degrees and the lower was 137. So hopefully filling the reservoir solved it? (I don’t see how ) the only other thing relating to the smell would be the oil filter cap. Maybe it was seeping oil and hitting the exhaust and when I changed the oil and retighten the filter with a new gasket sealed up the oil filter cap. I have no clue but hopefully it’s all good.

Thanks guys. I’ll check it in a few weeks to be sure.

I have had a few cases where the actual surge tank/reservoir would leak itself. Glad there is no leak at the moment. I will still plug in the vin to check what the milage runout is on the special coverage of there is any left.

Sometimes the oil will run down the side of the filter housing and drip onto the exhaust causing the oil smell until it’s been burned off aswell.

Glad all is good for now.
