      Hello i have a 1995 Honda Accord EX with 195,670 miles which failed smog due to high NOx Numbers.

      Could it be my Catalytic Converter or would just cleaning my EGR make the numbers at a passable level?

          There are several things that can cause high Nox levels. An inoperative EGR valve or plugged passages. Over advanced ignition timing, overheating, carbon buildup in the combustion chambers or a worn out catalyst. A lean fuel mixture is another cause.

          I would start with the ignition timing and then the EGR valve operation.

            Well some good news and “bad”.

            Checked everything from timing to EGR, all was good (i did have to clean the EGR, it was 100% clogged). Took it back and still failed (NOx went down a little), well, ended up being worn out catalyst. Replaced it and now:

            Was hoping it wouldn’t be that (Mechanic told me to begin with it was the cat, but expensive repair so wanted to see if anything else would bring it down)

              Thanks for the update. Yes, the 2 key components in eliminating NOx emissions are the EGR system and the catalytic converter. Looks like you got hit by both.

              Thanks for the update. Let us know if you pass the test after you replace the cat.
