Hey, I have a Honda Civic Dx, d16y7. I just did a head gasket job on the car and i was wondering about setting the mechanical timing. I was wondering if I could use the timing mark on the crank shaft pulley that you use when setting ignition timing. Would that be a accurate way of setting TDC for the crankshaft?

The way to set TDC at the crankshaft since you have to put the belt back on is to line up the timing marks at the crankshaft sprocket… You have to remove the pulley to do this, but you have to do that anyway to put the timing belt back on properly…

        Should look something like this…

It was a day job and I needed to drive the car again that night, so we just lined up the TDC mark on the crank shaft pulley and then put the cam at TDC. I was just wondering if that was an accurate way of doing it or if I need to pull everything off again this weekend.

Always refer with the timing sprocket as you need to rotate your engine once the belt is installed to confirm proper movement. then when you know it is good, put your cover and wrap up the rest.

The crankshaft pulley is for ignition timing.

It is the manufacturer way to do it. Maybe some honda specialist would find a quicker way. But always stick with the procedure when it comes to timing belt.

Yep, that’s the way I do it. Thanks for the update and for using the ETCG forum.
