Anybody else started a job assuming that it would be pretty simple and ended up having to tear half the car apart to finish it?

I went to replace a leaky lower rad hose on my 2002 Ford Escape. On the basis of my experiences with my Jeeps I thought it would take an hour maximum. I hadn’t figured with the engine end of the hose, which is buried in an area with no access.

After a couple of hours of trying everything possible to get onto the clamp from above and below (using a set of locking hose clamp pliers with the long flexible cable – standard pliers were just impossible given the lack of access) I had to pull the front bumper cover, condenser and radiator. And even with that level of access, it still took some finagling to get the clamp off.

All this, just for a lower rad hose…
