How To Use a Pinion Depth Gauge
How To Use a Pinion Depth Gauge
For me, using a pinion depth gauge is the best way to measure pinion depth and finding the perfect pinion shim. It’s way more accurate than going by gear tooth pattern and saves a bunch of time. In this video I show you how to set up and use the tool to measure pinion depth in just about any differential.
I hope you find this information useful!

For anyone, like myself, who has never worked on the differential of an automobile, I find this video highly informative. Even if I never do it myself, I will at least know what a mechanic has to do to ensure my differential is within spec.s. Imagine the surprise from the mechanic when the work order has a comment from the customer, “Ensure you use check pinion depth.” Yeah, I know – smart alecy customer! But, at least you know that he or she knows you are an ‘informed’ customer and you might just avoid shortcuts.
