      Dave this is a wild thought! The Saturns would have this problem also. TPS would sometimes for what I understand was base of the problem, and a blocked passage or carboned up IAC.
      Strangely on my moms car, it turned out to be engine temperature not warm enough and or computer not getting correct signal to know engine was right temperature.

            What transmission or vehicle?
            I know some transmissions such as the early to mid 90’s escort used a throttle cable that regulated oil pressure while still having solenoids for shifting e.t.c.. They were later replaced with electronic pressure control solenoid.

                    I would start first by checking fuses with ignition switch off. If the fuses have the spots you can put the probes from a multimeter,(you are measuring the fuse in series with its self) measure between these 2 spots. If current is going through, there should be a millivolt reading. Higher the mv is the more current.

                                  I am guessing here but, I think them pliers may be more of a tack or a staple type plier for upholstery.
