How is the general condition of the motor?
If most things seem good, just will not start cause of temperature. I would like to see what the coolant temp is showing with a scanner.

Do some research first on that transmission. It may be as simple as a valve body kit and or solenoids. Ranger forums would be a good place to start. Some of them sites have quite extensive transmission repair categories.
As far as rebuilding, some are not easy some are so so. Have a digital camera taking pictures with each step and watching how each mated or went as you go.

I would throw in a mig welder. Sometimes you have to make your own tools when the money is not there to buy special tools.

As far as wood, it supports tons of weight more then your car. It just needs to be something you are sure you have laid in correctly.

Now jack stands. If you are using them on anything but good concrete, forget them and use concrete blocks with wood.

I had a good friend who used jack stands out on a what appeared to be solid crushed rock driveway. One corner sunk in kicking the car back enough to fall on him and crush him.

I will use both methods at times depending on what the situation is.

I will throw a guess out there.

You did not mention if other work was done, so I am wondering if air condioner pump bearing froze up.

My first thought on the difficult fill hole was to unhook the return line from the tranny cooler and push the fluid back through it.
A hand pump sprayer at a local hardware store with a few added pieces will work for this much like Erics pump set up he had. I also use this for prelubeing engines if they sat a while.

Dave this is a wild thought! The Saturns would have this problem also. TPS would sometimes for what I understand was base of the problem, and a blocked passage or carboned up IAC.
Strangely on my moms car, it turned out to be engine temperature not warm enough and or computer not getting correct signal to know engine was right temperature.
