November 15, 2018 at 7:28 pm in reply to: Replace Automatic Transmission Fluid – GM 6T30 MH9 #891472
We have a 2015 Sonic 1.8l automatic , so I will bet it is the same .
What I did was jack up the LF side & remove the wheel . Open the hood and lay a 3′ level on the top radiator support . Raise / lower the LF side until the level was level .
Remove the drain plug in the bottom of the transmission . After draining , replace the drain plug . Remove the upper inspection plug on the wheel side of the transmission . Fill until new Dexron 6 ATF drips out of the inspection hole . Start engine and with foot firmly on the brake , run the transmission through the gears several times .
With the emergency brake engaged , transmission in park , fill again until Dexron 6 again comes out of the inspection hole . Best I remember , some where around 5 quarts + – .
Put everything back together , drove it to bring ATF temp to normal . Jacked it up and checked it again .
Note , the ATF that came out is very dark , almost black .
Thinking about doing this procedure , spill & fill , again .

Temporary put some cardboard in front of the radiator to block off some / most of the air flow .

A little update . I suppose the truck has been running since my last report .
On the warmer days , he changed oil / filter . Then took it to the mechanic . No codes & the mechanic did not fine any thing wrong / broken .
So , my cousin just called . He was taking the truck home . For now , he says the truck is running fine .
I feel for him . His situation , now is kind of like walking around with no belt . Your pants could drop to the ground at any time . ๐
Thanks , ๐

God blessI have replaced in tank fuel pumps on older Chevys . There was a ” sock ” filter on the pick up tube and an external fuel filter .
Look up your vehicle on RockAuto.com .
Stay safe and keep your head down . Thank you for wearing the uniform of our country and serving . ๐

God blessIs it getting hot enough to boil the coolant ?
Any symptoms of a blown head gasket ? You can buy a test kit to determine if exhaust gas is present in the coolant . Changes color .
Wyr
God blessI would change the coolant and all the other fluids ( brake , power steering , tranny & diff ) .
Look for any / all hoses & belts that look questionable . Tires , brakes & brake hoses .
Look for exhaust leaks .

God blessDo not forget to check the neutral / park switch on an automatic tranny .

God blessRoughly 1/2 the ATF will remain in the torque converter .
Consider extracting all you can , then drop the pan & clean it . Then replace the filter if it is DIY serviceable . Then button it back up and refill with the specified ATF .
Wyr
God blessConsidering around 1/2 the ATF stays in the torque converter , I do not think you are going to be hurt financially if you change the ATF often .
Our little Chevy Sonic 1.8l automatic has had a drain & fill twice in 40,000 something miles and it always comes out black . Using Dexron 6 .
By the way , boo to Chevy for not having a dip stick . It has a drain plug on the bottom of the tranny & an overflow plug on the side .
ATF fluid is cheap compared to a transmission rebuild / replacement . Also , no DIY tranny filter . I read the case has to be split to replace the filter .

๐Sounds like what you have been doing is working . Continue doing it . If it ain’t broke , don’t fix it .
I am old school and comfortable with 3000 mile OCI . Buy the oil / filter on sale . That way , an oil / filter change is not expensive ( if you do it your self ) .
What gets me is the person that makes a big deal of the cost of a 3000 OCI , yet pays $ 5 at Starbucks for a cup of coffee !

God blessIf no fuel flowed with the fuel filter removed , sure sounds like it has failed . Be sure to check for power , at the point where the pump plugs into the wiring harness .
Try to get as much gas out of the tank as you can . Before dropping the tank . Makes it lighter .Best of luck to you .

God blessHave you checked NAPA ? They may have more than one grade / price point ?
Wyr
God blessI have thought of something like that .
My concern is if it sticks down below the level of the pan . I fear it would get hit by something and break off . That would dump your oil pretty quickly . ๐

God blessI have heard of using Fluid Film ( mostly lanolin ? ) and several commercial products .
Luckily , rust is not a major problem in our climate .
