Dreams and Reality. People have to wake up. If you think you are going to get rich working at a dealership think again. Those days are over. These days you need to make at least $5,000 per month cash to think about living comfortable. I don’t know of any technician making that anywhere.
The system is a scam.
I don’t think anyone is talking about getting rich here. We’re talking about wages and the flat-rate system. Some people seem to think it’s fair and others really don’t agree. As for me, I left dealerships many years ago and got myself into a large corporation as a machine mechanic. From there, I was able to get into a management role in the company and I’ve never looked back. Best move I’ve ever made.
I just cant wait until I have my 2 years in so I can take my ASE cert.
Don’t wait. Take all the ASE tests you can now. That way you’ll be ASE certified as soon as you get your two years of work experience.
Well if he is looking for bi-directional capabilities, he could shoot for a MT2500. Obviously there is no support for them after 2006 i believe.
If not, the Actron CP9180 (i think it is) shows PID data at least as well as having the ability to read domestic OBD 1 vehicles.
The newest Actron scan can do ABS codes too (on domestic only i think?).
Just tell him to buy a Snap On Verus :D
Is there anything more low end that you can think of? His budget is $300 max and I believe he wants something current. I honestly haven’t kept up with scan tools very much, so I couldn’t really recommend anything to him. I’ve heard that Actron is really popular, but I don’t know much about them.
BTW, is there anything with bi-direction control that isn’t big money? Keep in mind I’m talking current scan tools, not older ones that have been replaced by newer models.
Also, does anyone here know anything about Toyota’s TIS Lite? I read on another forum that the software and cable can be purchased on ebay for around $50.00. Since my buddy has two Toyotas, it might be a good option for him. I’m not sure how capable TIS Lite is, but for that price, it’s still got to be a great deal. And if it has bi-directional controls, then it would be the best deal ever.

I left the industry because I didn’t like flat rate and all the politics associated with which tech was getting the gravy jobs, etc. It was the best move I ever made. I ended up working as a machine mechanic for a pharmaceutical company. They were impressed with my mechanical background and they loved that I had all my ASE certifications, despite the fact that they wanted me to fix/maintain their machinery and not motor vehicles.
Anyway, within 5 years I became the shop supervisor and was making close to a six-figure salary. Not bad at all for just five years out of the auto industry. Now of course I’m doing even better salary-wise, so I’m a happy camper.
BTW, I still love to wrench on cars, so I do side work from my home garage all the time. I actually have a decent little side business going, but not because I need the money, just because I like the work and it keeps me current.
