The cam phaser problem is real easy to fix, dump in a can of Seafoam and let it run for a while and change the oil after letting it run. This does work and saves money on cam phaser replacement.Basically frees it up.You don’t want to pull the head on the 4.2 inline six, most of the headbolts break off and a special jig is required to get the broken part out of the block.Window switch is too and to the dealer or a shop with a Tech 2 scan tool after installation.Comes out of the box not working and has to be programed with the Tech 2.Get a misfire, replace the coil
Weller Auto Parts breaks the spark plugs after pulling the engine out of the wrecked vehicle.I seen some they cut the electrode off and reinstall the spark plugs right back into the engine. One yard in my area, you don’t ever buy an used engine from. They pull it out from the vehicle and put a tag on it saying should be good.My dad knows,he put in 6 engines from them in an Olds Cutlass that were no good.
Problem is people finding out and calling the state on you.In Michigan, people can do this and report people doing this at their place since it is not registered
Some things you don’t used and better off buying new.Fuel pumps, water pumps and some exhaust manifolds and window regulators are few examples of this..Some auto body parts, buy new since they are cheaper to buy than used.Have one junkyard in my area, they put tags on used engines and transmissions saying this: should be good and they are not highly recommended place to buy used engines from.My dad learned this, went through 6 engines for one car from this junkyard which were all bad.
Get the twist sockets for rounded off and rusty fastners.I have several sets of them and well worth every penny saving me time.Mayhew makes them including Irwin.Mine are Matco sets which are rebranded Irwin and Mayhews. They do work.
I hate the 4.7 Chrysler with a deep passion,Chrysler should of never drop the 318.The 4.7 is a horrible pita to work and expensive when it breaks.Fault points are the timing chains and there 3 three of them.I hate the oil pan gasket which is part of the windage tray,Have to pound it off putting something between the oil pan and gasket to get it off
Any Cadillac with the Northstar does not bring money at the dealer only auction. The threads pull out of the block removing the headbolts and a special tool made by Kent Moore has to be used to install inserts in the block.Have the well known oil leak as well.
The 42RE transmission does hold up.The newer 5 speed automatic mated to the 4.7,a bullet proof transmission and rarely goes out.The 4.7 does have valve seat problems, installed loose from the factory. If you encounter one which the valve seat have come apart in pieces, replace the intake since there is no way of cleaning it out.
I have the Matco MT2816 and it is a powerful beast.Only thing it does is breaks bits and luckily Matco does warranty their air hammer bits which I had to do once so far.
Finding a transmission repair shop that will fix it is going to be hard. Will not get or touch the foreign automatic transmissions.Check the fluid level in neutral, not in park. The pump does nothing in park is the reason why to do it this way.
If the plugs are Bosch spark plugs, take out and throw away replacing them with Champions.Bosch spark plugs do cause misfires in Chrysler products.Would not hurt to do a compression check on those two cylinders as well.
The 4.7 also has problems with the valve seats dropping, installed loose from the factory. If you find one that the valve seat come loose and break into pieces, throw the intake manifold away and buy a new one.The little pieces get into the intake and the intake manifold can’t be taken apart to clean it out.Timing chain problems too and is expensive to replace timing chains in it.The 4.0,1999 to 2004,piston problems and the head was casted wrong.
I use the stainless steel cup brushes on a die grinder and no issues.Die grinders, check out the deals on the tool truck.I did and bought a Matco .75 HP 90 degree die grinder and got the straight one for free last year.Matco had this out.I go on a tool forum called Garage Journal, there are members on there that have bought the HF die grinders and never had a problem with one yet.
There is a drawback with the roloc discs used on a die grinder. The roloc discs on a die grinder can do damage, this is when cleaning gasket surfaces used on a die grinder.GM has a TSB on this not to use them. The little pieces can get in the oil which the oil filter can’t trap can cause premature engine failure. There have been cases of this happening including the use of scotchbrite pads.
All I do is put in a drop of air tool oil and run it.
