All places calibrating torque wrenches will not touch the cheap made in Taiwan made torque wrenches.Get yourself a good high quality one and don’t lower down to zero when not in use, lower it to lowest torque setting instead.Ruins the clicker mechanism when ran down to zero.
February 22, 2012 at 11:00 am in reply to: What’s your take on this transmission flush method? #457833Call the dealer first what fluid is used.Don’t use the specific fluid,do damage to the transmission.
Rebuilding is not an option at most shops, reman engines are the way to go.My father,he talks the customer into a Jasper reman engine.Much cheaper to do this and takes a couple days.Rebuilt engines,a couple weeks and the vehicle sits. With a Jasper,a hassle free 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. The 302s,the #8 piston get destroyed because someone that does not know what they are doing crosses the #8 plug wire.
1/4 impact wrenches are used for engine work too, valve covers are one application.IR including Matco make the best 1/4 impact wrenches.Cordless impacts can’t take off very tight bolts.Buy a good impact wrench,IR is one and Snap On impact wrenches are junk.I see the Snap Ons in my Matco tool dealer’s tool truck as trade ins and no one wants them.
It depends on the brand of the fuel pump too and I see this a lot with Airtex fuel pumps.Airtex fuel pumps are nothing but flat out junk and I will not install one.Delphi and AC Delco are the best fuel pumps for GMs only.
February 16, 2012 at 11:00 am in reply to: What is this I’m hearing about “preparing” an engine for synthetic oil? #457517Mixing the two,I have seen sludge buildup in the oil pan,a 2000ish Bonneville.Replaced the lifters at first, noisey and it was the mixing of a quart of synthetic with convential oil.Told the person, one of my father’s friends not to do it again and he does not anymore. The Saturn engines, don’t use synthetic in and says in the owner’s manual.A fresh rebuilt engine,Synthetic oil is not used at first start up.Synthetic oil is too slippery.Break in oil or convential oil is used at first.Synthetic lubricants can do damage too and Royal Purple is know for this for racing rear ends. Most race car drivers kick off Royal Purple synthetic gear lube off the side for racing rear ends,it does damage the ring and pinion including destroying the rear end used
The European and some of the Japanese car makers use 12 point axle nuts. Most of the tooltruck brands such as Mac,Matco,Cornwell and Snap On,you pay over $20.00 just for one axle nut socket.
Jasper does reman the 3400 using the updated metal intake gaskets. The intake bolts,GM says not to reuse them for the 3400s.The Dorman kit uses the updated metal intake gaskets with new intake bolts. The 3400 is an interferance engine, the valves bend if you install push rods in the wrong spot.6 short and 6 long pushrods. You can tell real easy, the short pushrods are a 1/4″ shorter than the long push rods.Removing the engine is a huge job and can be a pita to do.The engine comes out from the bottom with the transmission still bolted to the engine.I have done a few of them and I hate doing them called time consuming.

Same as Chrysler too,use the ATF+4 fluid in their automatics only.I change the fluid and filter in a Chrysler,I have a case of ATF+4 fluid on hand.Ford is the same way starting in 1998,Mercon V is only used.Don’t ever have a flush done with the machine and I hear horror stories about them.Transmission does not work right after the flush is done.I know a transmission shop that makes money off of flushes and the repair is more than the flush called a valve body cleaning. The lines are above the valve body and filter full of dirt and crud. That dirt and crud ends up in the valve body during the flush.
Went to an Auto Value tech expo yesterday, bought a GP 1/4 impact socket set and GP does make good impact sockets for a reasonable price.I did get a good deal on them. Also bought a set of Gearwrench ratcheting wrenches too.
I see this a lot.One was a Dodge truck my father bought, had 3 compression fittings used on the brake lines.Did fix it right using brake line by the roll and did get rid of the compression fittings.
Most of Ford’s manual transmissions with the aluminum case in their trucks use regular automatic transmission fluid. There are some that use motor oil.GM and Chrysler use special fluid from the dealer.Another thing always check the fluid level in a manual transmission during every oil change.I have seen a burned up 5 speed out of a Ford truck, oil change place never checked the fluid level.
Parts Plus and Auto Value.Won’t buy parts from AutoZone, sell the cheapest garbage out there if you want to do the job so many times.Luckily the Auto Value parts stores sells Delphi fuel pumps instead of the junk Airtex fuel pumps.
February 8, 2012 at 11:00 am in reply to: 1994 Buick Century Custom, Possible oil pump replacement. #435800Possibly a camshaft broken in half and this a very common problem with the 3100.Have seen this a few times, pull the camshaft out and it is broken.Engine block is automatically junk when this happens.Found out why it happens too,the engine block was was not casted right and the 3100 engine blocks were casted in China. The camshaft journals were casted offset and Jasper,an engine/transmission reman company is the only place that has the tooling to fix this problem.
