Last shop i was in provided tools.
Roughly 50-80$ million in tools, and that number gets bigger all the time as they order new specialty tools.
very nice.. looks like basic s-cam air brakes. looks like fun. 🙂

Here in the states we have dollies as well for combination trailers; however, ours are almost exclusively single axle.

They are almost all S cam these days. Also single axle tend to be for lighter and single trailer loads. Duel axle for heavier loads and A/B trains(Multi-trailer). Triple tend to be used off-road for logging and mining. Traction and heavy loads.
Australia is intense for this…

Road trains.

If i am needing a job asap, i just call around and ask for service managers/supervisors and talk to them. I tell them what i am looking for, about what i am, what i know, and what i am willing to do and we go from there. If they are looking they will ask for a resume, and to meet in person.

Could just be the new guy stigma, some older guys think you are replacing them, and other just don’t like new people because you are not one of them… yet.

So basically you are what we call “High-way Heavy Duty Mechanic” out here in Alberta, Canada? (or Commercial Transport Mechanic out in British Columbia)
I work on equipment and very big trucks.

What is the apprenticeship system like in Australia? Here in Canada it goes province to province and they are all a little different. I am doing my 1st year as a heavy duty mechanic (I guess its a diesel mechanic… or whatever…), its 4 years, 6 weeks of schooling every year.
I worked with a “diesel” mechanic from Australia last year, he worked for a Caterpillar dealership in Australia … like he does now… and i did. I used some of his Kincrome tools when i was working with him, but he mostly had Cat branded Snap-On.

Basically keep your mouth shut for awhile. Listen!! Listen to what you are told, taught, and what is said about you. LEARN! Learn from everything! You should always be learning, as i was taught, “you should learn something knew everyday, even if its something you already learned”
Don’t act like a know it all, but also don’t ask TOO MANY QUESTIONS. It’s good to know what you are doing and its good to ask questions, but too much of either or both PISSES PEOPLE OFF!
The first few months are toughest, new people, new place, new learning curve. Just gotta keep your head up and don’t whine about what people say about you, if it’s not true then who cares? if it is true, then maybe look at if it’s worth changing or not.
I could go on all night about this, but i gotta pack.

The one bit of technology that I am anxious to see is electronic solenoids to open and close the valves, then we could eliminate all of the valve-train that would lose a lot of weight and moving parts.
Caterpillar messed around with this idea and came up with their HEUI system which fires the injectors on Ford & IHC diesels. The system uses a high pressure pump that drives the plunger to assist the electric solenoid. It seems to be a reliable system but the pilot injection does not work on the Ford ECM.

Someday everything will drive by wire
It doesn’t really assist the solenoid, the solenoid controls oil flow to the plunger. The plunger acts as an intensifier pushing the fuel into the firing chamber past a check valve.
