Check fuel pressure regulator, could be leaking internally. I have tested some pressure regulator by removing the vacuum line at the regulator right after running vehicle and found fuel in the line. I have also just removed the vacuum line while engine running held finger over vacuum line and the regulator spit out fuel just be careful, fuel can ignite. one other thing I seen done is to temporally replace the vacuum line with clear line then you will see fuel being sucked into the vacuum line. if you find fuel then it is leaking inside the diaphram.
On the 97 chevy cavalier if you do not see a leak out side the car, check the carpet and under the floor mats for water. You can fill the cooling system and then use a radiator pressure gauge to pump up the cooling system then look for leaks. If it is the heater core you can bypass it by connecting the two heater hoses together till you can change the heater core.

I want to say it could be possible. I do not think the sensor is causing the knocking, I think when a good knock sensor detects an engine knock then it will retard the ignition. So with a broke sensor I think the computer is not getting a signal to retard the ignition. I would say the first think to do is fix the sensor. Good luck.

does it run rough only in drive and reverse. does it smooth out when you put it in park or neutral. If it does I would check the motor mounts. How many miles on the car.

I would see if the freeze frame data tells you when the code was set. If it was set at idle then I will look for a vacuum leak first. if it was set underload like say traveling at 30 MPH then I would check fuel pressure because something is causing you to get the lean condition under load, like low fuel pressure, cloged fuel filter, bad fuel pressure regulator, bad fuel injector, ETC.

When you changed fuel pump, did you just do pump or the whole assembly. There have been problems with the fuel pressure regulators on them. I beleave the pressure regulator is part of the assembly. Do what College Man said, if starts then regulator. If you can test fuel pressure you can see if the pressure bleeds off soon after shutting it off. good luck.

I would check the rotors. sometimes when you get them turned they are thiner and there is more of a chance of warpage. I would start there, check them if warped I would replace with new ones. good luck.

I would keep it on. put in new rivits or replace with washer and sheet metal screw in same rivit hole if you can. They put the heat shield there for a reason so try to keep it on. Good luck.
