After reading your post it sounds like you are having a “loss of prime” Your filter seal could be bad or filter itself could be bad and allowing the fluid to drain back to the pan after sitting and then having to re-prime the system. Also converter drain back will cause the same symptoms. This is when you have excessive clearance between converter hub and pump bushing allowing fluid to drain out of the Torque converter and back to the pan. A really easy way to check this is first thing before starting engine just pull trans dipstick and see how far over full the fluid is on the stick. You may just need to change filter and filter seal. If it is converter drain back the have a one way valve you can install in the cooler line to help that problem. Also the “tick, tick, tick” you hear is normal it is the solenoid pack valves ratcheting as they function. Hope this helps. Let us know how things work out.

That is going to be a version of a Toyota transmission AW4. Check fluid level, make sure you have all the ground straps reattached. The TV cable will need adjusted if it was disturbed. It may be different set up than the one in the link posted above. Some will have will have nuts on the cable end you adjust. Let us know how things work out,

The TAAT trans is noted for a nut coming loose on the rev drum. Easy to get to while in the car.

Sounds like you are describing the TCC function. Lock up of the torque converter. Normal operation.

Do you have the service engine light on? If so get it scanned and let us know the codes. Sounds like the very common torque converter failure. Could be a stripped reaction shell that catches once in a while. I bet you have a P1870 code and the converter is failed. The harsh shift you get after a long drive is the computer ramping up the line pressure to try and save the transmission. Could be in failsafe mode also. Let us know what you find out.

More than likely you have bent or broken a shift cable or mounting bracket. Possible bent shifter mechanism on interior of car.

Temp controls TCC apply and can even inhibit overdrive until set temp is reached.

I would go ahead and drop pan and put in new filter(don’t forget o-rings) look at the magnet for debris. New front seal is a good idea. Make sure converter is locked in the transmission! These are very easy to break pump gears in if not setted all the way in. 4×4 no rear seal, just gasket between ext. housing and transfer case. Good luck man.

Put the cooler in line with the factory one. The trans is dependent on temp for functioning properly. Also like said before FLUSH your cooler in your radiator.
