Unfortunately the manual method you describe doesn’t work so well with my car, both the entry and exit pipes on the heater matrix are at the bottom, which may obstruct the escape of the air above (I should of mentioned that in the original question).

I could partially dismantle the dash to turn the heater matrix over to help the air escape but its not ideal. So any info on the vacuum filling question would be really helpful to me.
