The hesitation just seemed to become noticeable here recently.

No, it’s been there even before the O2 sensor replace. And yes I did use a denso sensor. Someone told me it’s better to use name brands like that than off brands because they might cause issues.
Start at the basics. Can you attach a scan tool/fuel pressure gauge and post the data?
It’s an obd1 car, so I am not sure the scan tool would work, or even if its able to be hooked up to anything. One of my biggest irritations because I am lacking so much info from the car. As far as a fuel pressure regulator, I would have to check with some of the techs and see if they have anything like that.

Yeah, that’s one of the things I did two years ago. I took the egr valve apart, scrubbed it clean, put a new gasket, cleaned the throttle body, even cleaning the entire intake before putting it all back together. I even put a new thermostat in there when my radiator blew up from old cracking plastic. The o2 sensor would make, as I haven’t replaced those in the 7 years I have had it.

After looking over the posting collage man put up, I am still confused. The issues I have are smog related. I am already going to be doing a full tune up, and since I work in a shop some of the bigger tests I can do there. The problem I am having is I don’t know where to start looking for a problem. The car runs fine. I don’t have any codes. If I had a problem I would actually have an easier time diagnosing it as I can figure out why its failing smog there. The only issue I am feeling is the smog fail.

Granted they said my timing was a little off. I am supposed to be at 15 degrees off TDC plus or minus 2, so being at 17 is within that margin of error.

I don’t have a digital thermometer on hand, or I would test the cat to see if that’s the problem, but if it is bad, why did it fail in 2 years?

Here are the numbers. I just snapped a picture of the smog form. 2 years ago I had to put in a new cat, so I doubt that’s the problem. I am clueless about smog stuff so any advice would be helpful.

Ok, so it seems my clutch issue has gotten worse. I went in and replaced my slave cylinder as it really was leaking quite badly. The issue started to creep up over the last few days until i cant drive the car normally. I bled the clutch fluid and everything and am a little confused as to whats going on.

I read all the clutch threads i can and none of them sound like my issue. I dont have the standard slipping at all. Instead i cant seem to get the car INTO gear. I push on the shifter and takes a lot of force to go in. Once there it acts like normal. It takes off with no slipping, and comes out of gear beautifully until i need to go in the next gear and its back to being hard to go in. If i put the car in neutral and just step on the clutch pedal, the engine bogs down as if i am trying to feather the clutch. I think thats the right term where you let the clutch out just enough to stay still if your at a stop going uphill? Its hardest going into first, and the higher gear i try going into, the less force is needed to get it into gear. If anyone knows what this is, please let me know. Hopeing this isnt a full on clutch replacement i need to do.

Thanks for the response guys. The odd thing is, I replaced the motor at 250k with a used crate motor. H22a, the J-spec motor. It “shouldn’t” be that old. It was said to have 30k -90k on the motor when I got it, plus putting another 50k on it myself. As for how reliable that is, I can’t verify.

But yes, the blue smoke was seen while the engine was warm and running. I don’t see it myself from the drivers seat, and it’s not some huge cloud, just a tiny puff. The other indicator is I have a lot of black soot built up on the back bumper above the tail pipe.

Thanks. These don’t quite sound like the issue I am having, but they are certainly things I’ll check tomorrow morning.

Just to elaborate a little though, the problem isn’t coming so much as a sound as a feel. I really don’t hear anything, I can just feel it in the pedal when I step on it and also when I release it. It’s always at the same point too.

Thanks for the advice and things to look at first. Really hope its not my clutch going out.
