Or he could have meant to go buy the part you want to learn about where it is cheap; take it home and dismantle it. If you really have a passion to learn about something then it would be worth 35,40,50 bucks for a part to further your education.

The way the described it to me was that the people that owned it before lived on a rough dirt road and they drove the s*** out of it on that road. So I don’t think it was really used for off roading but probably not much difference. It had no warranty it was As-Is unfortunately.

I didn’t take it off road. We just bought it from South Point Chevrolet. I reputable, big name dealer here. They told us it needed tires. They are worn, evenly, but worn. Because of the dealer it was purchased at I figured some of that would have been checked and replaced if it needed it that bad. Guess I thought wrong. Hopefully it is just tires then.

I didn’t think it would be an out-of-balance issue because all of the wheel weights appear to be there. There are wheel weights on the inside and outside of the wheel. It was used for off-roading but it has been cleaned up. I’ll try rotating the tires and see if the problem moves to the back. I did a shake down on the front end and everything is tight. I don’t know how tho check the struts. Can you check them while they’re on the vehicle?

So I finally replaced the front struts on the Cavalier and that’s what was causing it for sure. I’ve never seen suspension so bad. There was no resistance what-so-ever; when I pushed them down they stayed down. lol
Didn’t know that bad suspension could cause such problems.
                      Thanks everyone for your help.

okay so I think all it’s just old struts. so my next question is…
I replaced the struts all the way around on my Ford Taurus and it caused the strut mounts to go out and I think it was the cause for the ball joints to go out. If I replace the struts on this Cavalier is there any way I can get away w/ doing only the struts or should I get a quick strut and save myself the trouble of doing everything twice?

the sound seems like it’s coming from the inner tie rod. Can that being loose cause the steering problem it’s having? everything else seems to be in good shape. the boots are busted on the outer tie rod but the are firm for now. Can you tighten the inner tie rod or do they have to be replaced?

The PS fluid is full, axle nuts are tight. everything tests out good. It’s has to be coming from inside a boot somewhere on something I can’t see directly like the inner tie rods. I just don’t want to fix something that’s not broken, I don’t have the money to spend.
