I’ve been at it for 10 years and I still have it happen. I’m so used to doing things that I don’t remember doing them and find myself worrying about nothing. Almost every car gets a quick finger test of the lug nuts because I don’t remember hitting them.

You could always buy used from the tool guys. Toolboxes get repoed all the time. I scooped up a Matco 6 series for $2500 vs the $10k sticker price of buying it new.

I worked for Honda for years up until last fall. Honestly I loved it. Big reason I left and alot of other techs left was the warranty extension on the 2.4L and 3.5L that burn oil. Nobody wants to be rebuilding motors for the next 10 years for 9 hours of warranty labor. The dealer I was at was one of the 5 busiest Honda dealers in the country. You would finish 1 rebuild and instantly draw another.

Customer said they where going 10mph and it just quit running. Note that the valves are sticking out of the pistons.

Customer said they think that they might have hit something.

I’ve never really had an issue with book times when I was flat rate. I left the dealership last year because I’m not going to rebuild warranty motors for 9 hours a piece for the next 10 years. Even on the warranty rebuilds, most of us broke even. Majority of our 22 techs averaged between 35-50 hours a week(on a 4 day work week) with a select few averaging 60-80. We also turned 100 cars a day on a slow day and 200+ cars a day in the summer, I’m not sure what the traffic flow for you guys is.

I’ve worked on several different pay plans. I’ve been hourly with spiff bonus, flat rate with production bonus for every 10 hours I go over 40, one with two different pay scales “12hourly/28 flat rate” and got whatever paid more at the end of the week. Now i’m hourly with a weekly goal, If I hit my production goal for the week I get 10% of everything I do over my goal. Works out pretty good for me, I know i’m always going to bring home X amount as a minimum but most weeks I tend to do far better.

I always found minding your own business and focusing what you’re doing helps flag more time.

I worked in a ghetto shop for about 4 weeks before I couldn’t take it anymore. It wasn’t uncommon to see stuff half asses together. By far the worse was a Pontiac Bonneville with 6, yes 6 compression fittings between the master cylinder and the right front wheel. I couldn’t believe that this hood rat was driving around putting his family and everybody else in that kind of danger.

Those would be struts not shocks. Be careful, i’ve seen guys get messed up pretty bad from struts springs. No need to replace anything else unless it has play. If you are doing them yourself I would suggest a “quick strut”, it comes as an entire assembly already put together with new spring and mount. Have vise grips on hand because sway bar links like to spin in their joint, clamp the vise grips on the tapered rod and the nut should come right off.

When I was in my internship my mentor had a civic towed in for a no start. We went through all the diag, we had spark, fuel, air, compression. why wouldn’t it run? we spent hours go through every bit of wiring diagrams and flow charts. Finally one of the parts guys joked that maybe the cat was clogged. Pulled out the o2 sensor and it fired right up.
