      I just tried this on a 2006 Honda CR-V. I had the same issue with the rental tool. Too short, no clearance.

      Two real big tips here. First, undo the lock washers.

      I spent too much time and torque trying to muscle it off without having undone the lock washers.

      The second big tip is to get both wheels off the ground, and adjust the steering to where you can get the most clearance from the top, for whatever tool you are using. There are a few positions available with considerably more clearance.

      I got it started with an air chisel (probably shouldn’t have) then I used vise grips on the 29mm that came with the rental kit. A 29mm Crows foot is really what was needed, but I did not have access to one. There is also a collar tool that looks like it would work well “Inner Tie Rod Tool 27-42mm Hex Wrench” for about US$15 but I cannot say from experience.
