So, just to give some conclusion to this topic, yes, it was rod knock after all. I bought another engine and will swap it soon! Thanks everybody for your inputs!
Hi guys!
So I took the car to the mechanic and he told me that it was rod knock. However, he played with the timing a bit, so that when it was retarded the knocking disappeared and when it was fully advanced, the knocking got louder. We could listen for the knock with the car stactionary, and the sound defeneatly came from the back of the engine, not the front, so I guess the craked exhaust isn’t the culprit.
Does this make any sence to you? The spark plugs are in good condition!
Thank you all for your replys!
I will defeanetly look into loose bolts on the accessories and later will fix the manifold. Just have to spend money on other things first.
Monday I will take the car to a mechanic for him to give a good look on what the cause might be and I will keep you posted! π
Again, I greatly appreciate your inputs! B)
I should also point out that I cut the old oil filter open and it didn’t have any kind of shavings or particles! So probably worn bearings are out…
Also, when the car is moving at constant speed, I can’t hear the noise, only when accelerating!
That’s a good idea barney! I was going to remove the oil cooler to see if it has any visible leaking signs, but if I can screw the oil filter again without the cooler I will drive it for a while without it. I drive the car pretty gentle, I’m sure I’m not going to have any problems.
Yeah, Honda in the 80’s and 90’s had top notch engineering. That’s why I love them! π
Well, thanks for your advice but my car has an OEM sandwich oil cooler were the oil filter is tightened… If I wasn’t on mobile I would show you the OEM Honda parte number.
I had a 1990 CRX that had a bad oil cooler and only noticed when I saw that the headgasket was in good condition. Just don’t want to spend 400β¬ unecessarely again.
Hey guys! I know that this was buried under here, but I solved my problem with the rough shifting.
Turns out that poor quality oil can really ruin your transmission! I put some Mobil stuff in there 2 months ago and so far the shifting is 90% better!
Thanks everyone for your help! π

I thought on bumping this thread just to give you guys an update. The Suzuki hasn’t been touched yet, since it is my mothers and not mine, she won’t let me pay the repair nor she’s going to fix it soon. Oh well!
I also bought said CRX. Fantastic car, had to replace a few stuff, but hey, I love wrenching! π This weekend I’m going to rebuild the brake master cilinder and install braided brake lines, since my pedal began to go soft a few weeks after I changed the (completely rotten) brake fluid.

Thanks Eric! π
I’ll buy a Honda CRX MKII 1.6i16 (with the DOHC D16z5) too as a fun weekend car, can’t wait! π

I searched single mass flywheels, but it appears that there isn’t any available for my car… but if the new dial mass lasts another 200k km, I’ll be happy. If all goes to plan in January I’ll have the Jeep sold and the funds to repair the Suzuki, which has been sitting in the garage,a and I’ll report then! Thanks for your input everyone!
