Sounds like a wore out thrust washer in the trans to me. Probably too much endplay at the input shaft.

yes a PCV can rattle and be bad, if it doesn’t close then it creates a vacume leak at idle. Not common but have seen it happen, and for what it takes to test it then why not.

Might not be the same thing but it sounds like one that came to me. The engine was replaced and had the same symptoms after a year. Turned out to be chunks of silicone and junk in the oil pan. It would get stirred up after a short drive and partly block off the oil pickup. Then after sitting all night the chunks would settle back to the bottom of the pan.

There are so many reasons for a fire. I had one with a fuel leak ignite from a bad spark wire. Have seen afew with electrical fires. Seen a pile of early 80s cameros light up carpet from cat converter heat. There are many possabilities.

I just had a thought. As simple as it is you can check the PCV valve. Doesn’t explain all the problems but just take out the valve and jam a bolt in the hose as a test. Take it for a drive. It is a test that costs nothing. PCV can cause any of the problems I am seeing here at idle.

I had one a couple years ago that had the same symptoms. Different year but same engine. It ended up being a opening in the lower intake gasket allowing unregulated exhaust from the EGR port into the oil gallery and picked up through the PCV system. Only reason we found it was luck.

It was after passing my mechanics liscence I realized I was being a sucker that way. I have the training and spent the time and effort to learn. If my mother comes to me to fix her car she pays my rate like anyone else. All is fair in love, war, and business. Mechanics is a business no matter how much we love doing it.
