Well i took it to a reputable transmission shop near me and I explained what was going on. One of the techs took it for a test drive for about 10 minutes or so and told me it could be something as simple as a drive belt pulley or the front pump could be on its way out. He said it shifted fine and nothing was acting up aside from the whine. I told him I was only l planning on having the car for another year or so and he said it’s probably nothing that I should worry too much about. I’ll take off the serpentine belt and see if any pulleys are loose and see if thats the culprit. If not I’ll probably drop the pan and change the filter when the weather warms up a little.
I really just wanted to make sure it wasn’t going to take a crap on me before I spent all the money I would use for a repair on a new computer!Well i took it to a reputable transmission shop near me and I explained what was going on. The whine I first posted about was probably not the transmission. I say this because this morning I went to head out for the day and there was a much louder whine that was present in all gears, including park, and it was proportionate to engine speed. Its the coldest day we’ve had so far this year(low 20s) and it didn’t make this noise at all last night. It doesn’t completely go away but gets quieter when the car warms up.. What do you think? Just cold weather? Should that even happen in cold weather? I’ve never owned a car with an auto trans before and those black magic boxes kind of weird me out a little.
I uploaded a video to youtube so you all can hear.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ed97ueclwE&feature=youtu.beGenerally speaking I’m a stickler for quality in everything I buy. I don’t like having cheap crap break when I need it and then have to go out and buy another one. This goes for tools, parts, and just about everything else.
I learned this when i was adjusting the valves on my girlfriend’s civic, and even with the spark plugs out I managed to break the ratchet. To be fair it came in a cheapo $10 set with some sockets. Tools that I’ll need every time I work on a car I go for quality, preferably made in USA craftsman or similar. If it’s a tool I’ll use once in a while I’ll still go ahead and get a quality piece. If it’s something that I need for a specific job and will likely never need again and can’t rent, I’ll get a cheap one. I got a cheap air hammer and chisel to kill some riveted in ball joints. That was over a year ago and I’ve used it once since then to bust some more rivets.Generally speaking I’m a stickler for quality in everything I buy. I usually hang in the right lane since everyone seems to love to speed and I’m never really in a hurry and I get over when there’s an on-ramp full of cars about to merge. I did just that yesterday and some girl in a beemer decided she was going to cut across 3 lanes after she merged, I was right next to her and had to slam on my brakes and hope the person behind me was paying attention. I’m not worried about my own ability to drive safely, I pay a lot more attention to the drivers around me and what they’re doing so I can keep a nice safe buffer zone.

Well hopefully it’s being taken care of and not driven on the salty Maine roads! And hopefully he hasn’t molested it by putting dumb ricer stickers and crap on it.

Saying goodbye to my reliable old Chevy S10 pickup was tough. I put in hours of sweat blood and tears into that thing. It was the first vehicle I bought on my own, and I had it through some rough times and plenty of good ones too. I babied the thing with religious maintenance and quality parts and in turn it never left me stranded. I drove that truck all over the western US. Last month a wind storm brought down a tree onto the hood. The damage wasn’t too bad; needed a new hood, fender, grill, and passenger side headlight, but nothing effecting driveability was damaged. My insurance company decided it was totaled and gave me a check for $6000, not bad considering I paid $5500 for it! I thought about buying it back from them and throwing some junkyard body panels on it for a couple hundred bucks and pocketing the difference. But then I considered that I’d have to do the work in an apartment parking lot in the cold Oregon rain right in the middle of the end of the school term. Also it was in need of shocks, a new exhaust, and the frame rust was getting difficult to keep under control. I’d been thinking about selling it but never actually did, it was just unfortunate that things happened the way they did. I figured I’d let her go and get a different vehicle–I kind of resent the car I bought–it isn’t a bad car at all, but it isn’t a truck. I’ve been looking around at other trucks and may just end up getting another one and ditching the Cavalier.
I looked up the vin number of my truck and found the auction house it’s being sold at at the end of the month…Saying goodbye to my reliable old Chevy S10 pickup was tough. Did another test on my drive home tonight. It doesn’t seem to whine when I manually put it in 1st and 2nd. It only whines in 3rd and ‘D’. I took a short video–really just audio–of it. I can put it up on youtube if anyone thinks it’ll help. It isn’t terribly audible in the video but there’s a few parts where it is.
