OK……here is where I am now…… Took it to a Toyota dealer and they did a diagnostic on it (for $130.00). They said it was a bad fuel pump…which they offered to replace (for $930.00). I “politely” declined and took it to the normal mechanic I usually use who offered to do it for $213.00…which I gladly accepted. He did and the light stayed off for about twice as long as it usually did…….BUT, it’s back.

The STFT was about .8, but the LTFT was about 48.1 and the upstream O2 sensor was about .6 and the downstream O2 sensor was about 3.2v based on the freeze frame data.

I do not know if the dealer did a smoke test or not…I don’t think so….

Ok guys, I’m back. Havent had a chance to do anything until now. The car throws the code about every 20 miles if driving after I turn it off. Looked at some Freeze frame data today and the SHRTFT was -12 and the LONGTFT was 39. I don’t remember all the parameters in place when it wrote the data and I’ve erased it (Duh).

I started the car and while it was warming up the SHRTFT was about -12 and the LONGTFT was 18. It seemed to jump around a lot but as the vehicle warmed up the SHRTFT settled at about a -6.4 and the LONGTFT was about 7 (I realize it wasn’t running long enough to generate a good number). The O2B1S2 was about .8, but the O2B1S1 was at 3.2.

I’ve gone around to all the potential vacuum leaks with a can of carburetor cleaner and no change in engine speed or sound. I am having a hard time getting to the intake manual and my understanding is that these cars tend to have problem with the intake manifold gasket…..any thoughts or comments would be appreciated!

Thanks to everyone for all the replies…..it is appreciated. The lights came on again, today…the interval between events is getting closer together. Noticed today, it’s a bit hard to start….engine will turn over 6 or 7 times before it’ll catch. Also I have noticed a “coarseness” the idle. It’s not missing, but it’s like the A/F ratio is off on all cylinders. I will check and see if I can find a vacuum leak and get some freeze fame data. I’ll post back with what ever I find….or don’t find. Thanks again!

                Afternoon Gents…..

Shop called this morning said the truck was ready. Went to pick it up and was told that basicly it was not out of alignement, but they made some changes anyway. Drove away and although the problem did seem some better, the steering wheel was about 30 or 35 degrees counterclockwise from horizontal (grrrrr). So I call and the manager said that no, it should not be like that and to bring it back they would get it right. So I did and the original problem is a little better still (acceptiable) and teh steering wheel is now cocked clockwise from horizontal, but only about 5 degrees….acceptable. Heres the rub……it seems to me that the initial setings on the second alignment should be equal to the final settings on the first alignemnt. They’re not and there is now one setting after the second slignment that is outside the specs for this vechical. Right wheel camber is at -0.29 and the specs say it should be betweem -0.25 and 0.75 degrees. Hwoever, it does seem to drive ok now…..perhpas 95% of where I think it should be, so I’ll probably leave it alone at this point. When the truck was new (120K ago), this may have been how it drove. Anyway…as always, thanks to everyone for all there help!! This places is the best!!

Thanks for the replies Gents. The research I’ve done does in deed discourage bending the I-beams in this year as at some point they stopped casting them and bending these will weaken them. I didn’t have any problem before the ball joints were installed and it seems to me that if they had been put back like the were found.. ie with the shims and sleeves in tthe same place, there wouldn’t be a problem, but obviously there is. The guy who installed them comes highly recommended, its just that he doesn’t have an alignment machine. Dropped it off at a place that has treated me right in the past, so we’ll see. I’ll let you know what happens.

No offence taken, I assure you. I know my limitations and have no intention of screwing with the air bag system. Reading back over my post it probably sounded like I was going to try and diagnose it myself, but I agree, that’s one for someone that knows more then me. Thanks for your input!
