Quoted From dreamer2355:
Interesting as ive never heard or seen of the yoke ‘binding’ before…..
Yup, very common for the newer GM trucks, there was actually a TSB on them I believe. The yoke won’t slip as it’s supposed to causing that clunk/noise when coming to a stop fairly quickly or accelerating.
I mainly listen to country music, also like newer rock music.
Did you clean the rust down to bare steel where the sensor sits on the hub? 9 times out of 10 it’s actually the rust that builds up under the sensor that causes the problems. It affects the air gap between the sensor and the reluctor which gives false wheel speed sensor readings. A bit more rust on the opposite side will give a different speed than the other side, the ABS module things the one wheel is slipping and engages the ABS. There’s actually a recall on the 99-02 GM trucks for this concern.
Sounds like the upper plenum is starting to leak coolant into the cylinders, these engines are very common for that problem, it’ll rot through right near the throttle body causing an internal coolant leak. If it gets bad enough it’ll hydrolock the engine. Sounds like it’s wetting the plugs the first few cranks and eventually starts, the smoke you see is probably burning coolant, once it’s burned out it’ll run fine. Coolant smoke is usually white.
If it’s a darker color smoke it could also be injectors leaking down when the engine is off causing a flooding condition on initial start up.
Here’s my project. Bought this truck 5 years ago, drove it for a couple years, lost my licence for 2 years so I decided to do what I always wanted to do with it, build an engine and swap it out. Still ironing out some things and haven’t been able to drive it yet. But it does run good, can’t wait to finally be able to drive it.
2000 Chevy Silverado, regular cab short box, 5 speed manual, 4.3L
I’m a technician at a GM dealer, this 2005 Cadillac CTS-V is the doner for my truck, it dropped a valve, it broke in 3 pieces, ruined a head, face of the valve managed to wedge sideways in the piston, other pieces ended up in the intake, no cylinder damage at all! Customer wanted a brand new engine so I installed it.
Brand new $9K LS6 long block I installed in the “V”
I rebuilt the engine during the winter in well below 0 temperatures in my garage, new pistons andrings, all new bearings, 2 new heads, new LS6 intake, custom Lunati cam with Lunati springs.
The heart transplant begins
LS6 dressed up with some ceramic coated Edelbrock shorty headers, brand new complete CTS-V accessory drive
Installed in truck
Video after I got it running. What a thrill hearing it come to life for the first time!
http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/ … LS6vid.mp4The clunk when accelerating from a stop sounds like the slip yoke where it slides into the transmission. You need to grease the splines before putting it back into the back of the transmission (or transfer case on 4×4 models). If it’s dry the yoke will bind on the output shaft and give a clunk and a bit of a moan type noise.
To me it sounds like it may be as simple as a dirty throttle body. I know some of the GM’s I work on like the 00-06 trucks for example are bad for this. They get gummed up around the throttle blade and will only idle at 400rpm or so, and sometimes if you let off the gas quickly they’ll stall. Were you on the throttle when it cut out at 60mph?
I noticed that too, looked more like antifreeze than oil from the valve cover. Could be either that freeze plug or the intake gasket leaking and running down.
I have a crazy amount of tools, got at least 20K invested. Box is worth $12,000, got it for a LOT cheaper than that. It’s a Matco 6s triple bay. Mainly all Snap-On and Matco tools.

Yup, ask away everyone! I’ll put my best effort into answering any questions you have. Worked as a tech for 6 years now for GM, but will try my best to help you no matter what kind of car you drive.
Is it a hydraulic clutch? If so, sounds like a problem with the master cylinder. Just repaired a 1988 Fiero GT last week for the same issue, sometimes it’d be ok, then it’d start getting too much freeplay, like 3 inches on the pedal and eventually lose all clutch release control. I replaced the master and the slave just because of the age of the vehicle, looked like the slave was starting to leak, car only has 30K miles on it and the customer always keeps it in tip top shape. Feels like a brand new car now!
