Thank you for your support and assistance.
I’ll take out the thermostat to buy me some time.
Can I run the car in So Cal climate without a thermostat for lets say 60 days without any ill effects.
I think Eric’s latest video is about resurfacing. I’ll check it out asap.
I truely hope the “force will be with me”.
I plan on just throughly cleaning both head and block. No resurfacing. I know it may be a crap shoot oh well…….
Some folks have servived a HG change without resurfacing hopefully Permatex will help a bid.
If all goes to hell at least I tried, then off to a mechanic.Any tips on how to remove the guidepins gently from the head without messing them up.
I did bleed the cooling system, no luck. It appears there is some sort of back pressure causing the overflow tank to fill up and not drain back into the radiator.
This could be caused by engine compression.
I’m not dealing with the water pump at this time because that is a giant PITA.
Every morning I’m with the turkey baster refilling the rad.All the research I’ve done on various Honda forums show many people with the Exact symtoms as my Civic had a bad head gasket.
However I was unable to absolutely confirm other than the visual test of bubbles in overflow tank when can ran for a while and overflow tank fills up causing the radiator to be low on coolant. Then the temp gauge goes 3/4 the way upI ordered a fel pro head gasket, intake gasket and some permatex copper spray.
Im going to attempt a head gasket repair. Watched some videos and i think I can do it.Compression test was “dry” only.
I guess the only way to know if the head gasket is bad is to pull the head. If anything the head gasket most likely has a very small leak. Im still considering the options.I think my next course of action will be a bottle of Blue Devil. I saw a few bubbles in the coolant overflow today after about a 30 minute drive. And I mean very few.
Water pump
Very difficult very labor intensive and expensive.October 31, 2016 at 11:03 pm in reply to: I’m Totally Stumped and Frustrated – Coolant Issue #871267Today’s test results
Radiator pressure test @16lbs
May be dropped 1/4-1/2 psi in 20 minutesCylinder compression test
#1 180
#2. 180
#3 180
#4. 185So whats left:
Thermostat ( replaced with oem maybe 3 years ago)
Defective new radiator/ cap from Denso replaced maybe 90 days agoWater pump replaced at 113k currently 182k
Any thoughts pleaseBlock test fluid stayed blue again.
I watched Eric’s video on compression testing. I followed his instrucrtions to a tee. Inserted compression gauge screwed it into spark plug hole cracked for 5 seconds and the gauge would not hold the reading at all. I saw the gauge to up to the 120 range but immediately fell back to 0. I think Autozone rented me a faulty compression gauge. After thinking it over some more, this issue smells head gasket. Yes I did the block test with the blue fluid about 5 times always passed. Today I may rent the block tester again and a compression tester as well.
Trust me, I wish i had another option besides changing the rad. I hate wasting money throwing part at a 99 civic. Like the title says Stumped and very very frustrated.
