The ’98 Forester has the Phase I DOHC 2.5 engine. These engines had an internal head gasket leak, into the combustion chamber. Unlike the later Phase II SOHC 2.5, which was an external leak. Check for bubbles in the coolant (pretty surefire way to test for head gasket failure on these) when the car is running and test for combustion gases in the coolant. Most likely if you have coolant and oil mixing, you’ll have to do a head gasket job. Just the way of life with these cars. Best practice is to pull the engine, use the updated Subaru gasket (you could use the new design FelPro as well, but OE is preferred), and do other jobs like the timing belt at the same time. If you use the updated gasket, and do a thorough job, these engines are otherwise relatively trouble-free.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
I think I had the same reaction as many others when I first saw the car…wasn’t sure what to think. However, once you explained your plans, I think it sounds like a really cool project. I’m looking forward to the old-school mechanical videos, as well as the performance ones. I think this will be a lot of fun. I will say too that the car looks to be in great shape, and I kind of dig older Fords to be honest. And I get to learn all kinds of new stuff. GoPro footage is awesome too!
It’s also pretty cool to look at this and really see how far ETCG has come, with you now being able to do project cars like this. I love this format, kind of a Wheeler Dealers sort of thing, which is one of my favorite shows.
Finally Eric, you definitely just looked at home in that car. Same kind of look as you driving the Galaxie, so I’m really happy for you! Can’t wait to see this car at the meetup this summer!

I will echo the sadness in seeing the Subaru leave. I have owned two of them, and miss owning one terribly. My next car will almost certainly be a Subaru. There’s just something about them, they find a way into your heart – what great cars. In fact, I would have bought your Subaru Eric! Seriously, I would have.
Anyway, goodbye Subaru, sad to see you go, but should be excited about what’s next.

Thanks for the responses! Collegeman, I was actually leaning in that direction myself, and that is a great idea to test it, I will definitely try it.
It’s possible it comes from the speakers, but when I turn the stereo on the noise does not change at all, so that led me to think it might not be.
The plan is next time it makes the noise they will take it in to the dealer, the only issue is the Subaru dealer in town is not the greatest, so they wanted to get it done elsewhere but sure enough it didn’t make the noise.

Had an awesome time yesterday! Met some great people, had a ton of fun. Thank you Eric and I can’t wait for next year!

I am in fact a member of Fiesta Faction and posted in that thread. However, I was looking to get some other perspectives from the folks here. There didn’t seem to be a conclusion there so I am trying to see what other info I can glean. Thanks!

No vibration when going straight down the road, only if the road is rough. No vibration when turning left either. But yes vibration when braking at higher speeds and yes vibration when turning right and accelerating. For a right turn, I would think the left bearing is under load but I have had that replaced. Could it be the right bearing? The best way to explain the vibration is almost like axle hop.
