I knew right when I watched this video that there would be a lot of push back and claims that Eric “sold out”. I really don’t know why people are getting so upset. Right off the bat you made it clear that this was a paid advertisement. If you had disguised a paid ad as a regular video that would be different. But I know you wouldn’t do that to us.
I say take any sort of paid ads you get offered and think you can be honest about, because I know you’ll take that money and invest it right back into improving content for us.
I saw that briansmobile1 also got a lot of flak for the trailer hitch video he did since that was an ad. I don’t know what the issue with that was either.
I trust Eric and know whatever he does is ultimately in the best interest of the fans because he understands how important that relationship is. Why not everyone else try to understand too?

There are some places like that out there (Google “Self-Serve Garage”), but I think it’s a great idea. I would definitely use a place like that (I’m in Central NY, would love a warm place to wrench on stuff), I’m just not sure how many people would take advantage of it. Perhaps in certain areas of the country it would work better than others. And of course the liability issues.

Is the defroster staying on for the normal 10-15 minutes and turning off or turning off very quickly? Most cars are designed to let the defroster go for about 15 minutes and then turn off. I would advise against wiring it up to a separate switch, the defroster can draw a lot of power and if you forget to turn it off can drain your battery. I believe the defroster is on a timer to avoid excessive power draw as well as to avoid anything being damaged by running constantly.

Hey Eric, I had a thought, I would love to see some nice hi-res pics of the Fairmont in a photoshoot on your Flickr account. I think it would be cool to see it in detail.
I should probably do this. Do you by any chance know of a local place that carries 3M silicone paste? I dont ever find it anywhere I go. I know lots of places online Im just impatient. :-)
I know that my local Parts Plus where I get most of my parts from carries it, but I haven’t seen it anywhere else. I ordered mine online, along with the 3M anti-seize.

I agree with collegeman, unless your engine is very high mileage or has other problems, I would just do the head gaskets on it, and any other maintenance it may need, and you should be in good shape.

Reviving this thread from the archive, to post the solution, in case it helps somebody.
Ended up taking my car to a different dealer who confirmed the vibration when turning. They replaced the right CV axle shaft and the vibration is gone. Was replaced under warranty, no fuss.
Hope this helps someone!

The ’98 Forester has the Phase I DOHC 2.5 engine. These engines had an internal head gasket leak, into the combustion chamber. Unlike the later Phase II SOHC 2.5, which was an external leak. Check for bubbles in the coolant (pretty surefire way to test for head gasket failure on these) when the car is running and test for combustion gases in the coolant. Most likely if you have coolant and oil mixing, you’ll have to do a head gasket job. Just the way of life with these cars. Best practice is to pull the engine, use the updated Subaru gasket (you could use the new design FelPro as well, but OE is preferred), and do other jobs like the timing belt at the same time. If you use the updated gasket, and do a thorough job, these engines are otherwise relatively trouble-free.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
