I know whatcha mean having a bit of slack between the two gears. Sometimes I offset the gears ever so slightly, put the belt on then move the gears to tdc, this takes up the slack. Keep us posted.

It might make it more difficult with the head off the car because the head will wiggle around a bit with you fiddling with it. I use two #2 phillips head screwdrivers in two of the 12mm head bolt holes and wigggle them back and forth. This will usually unseat them from the dowel pins. You took out all the 10mm head bolts right?
Watch this video and make sure you got all the bolts out, then try the screwdrivers. Good luck!

is it a noise or can you feel it?

I ended up not being comfortable wasting more of my time with the “remanufactured” engine. I swapped in a JDM d15b and was able to set the ignition timing with no problem. The only thing I can think is maybe their camshaft or crankshaft had a mis machined keyway or something.

Watching this video saved me an 02 sensor. I put an aftermarket exhaust manifold on my sisters 97 civic and noticed the hole wasnt compeletely machined out like yours was. A bit of work with a drill and I got the sensor to fit without touching. Kudos!

They will replace the short block, aka the block w/pistons, rods, crank, oil pump and oil pan.

that carbon build up is normal. Are the lost motion assemblies installed under the intake rocker arms? They are springs that keep tension on the intake rockers when vtec is not in use. Is the noise louder on the intake or exhaust side of the head??
