Thanks, I know it’s confusing.
This is easy.
So, you’ve determined that your #2 fan can actually work, now it’s time to do some testing.
The next easiest step is to test some of the major players involved in your cooling fan circuit. Probably the easiest thing to check at this point would be the #3 (high speed fan) relay. You could actually take the time and effort to learn how to test this relay… or you could just swap it out with a known good relay. (the horn relay for example.)
In the meantime, you might want check out this recent (and very similar) case study:

I understand if nobody touches this…
This isn’t rocket surgery; any qualified technician here can handle a cooling fan problem.
I’ve used a bypass wire from coolant fan number 2 black at the fan and grounded it. Still the fan will not work.
If you’ve supplied power and ground directly to fan #2 and it is still inop, replace fan #2.

It’s a reward for offering good advice free of charge. The intent being that if you are always helping others that good things in life will come your way at some point.
Mine has been dropping steadily over the past year… :silly:

I may often be interested in hearing someone’s opinion, but I am never interested in hearing someone’s _ _ _ hole.
so does this make the relationship between opinions and _ _ _ holes mutually exclusive..? (i.e. you can have an opinion, you can have an _ _ _ hole, but you can’t have an opinion and an _ _ _hole)

It’s a tough call…. My belief: I would side with the manufacturer since they engineered the product and have inside knowledge into it’s design and operation. We can assume that the manufacturer is aware of the practice of draining oil and has for some reason advised against it. (if you designed something for example, I would be apt to take your word as to it’s proper use as opposed to a general and widely accepted practice) Also, straying from the manufacturer’s instructions could lead to warranty issues.
But I might be wrong.. it may be quite possible that there is no “right” or “wrong” answer here, just a better option.

Here are some things that we never did in school that I wish I could have learned:
1. Swap an engine
2. Swap a transmission
3. Flush an A/C system
4. Do a brake job on a truck with roller-taper bearings
5. Brake down a Northstar engine
6. Change a clutch
7. Tear out a dash/HVAC assembly
8. Set timing on a DOHC engine
9. Perform a valve adjustment
10. Perform a head gasket repair.I can do a lot of these things just from learning on my own. Some of these things I would like the experience of doing.

I would lean away from a ECM failure as all other computer controlled components are functioning properly… but all things are possible in the world of automotive.
That said, test for reference voltage directly from the ECM to rule out this possibility.
