I work in a independent shop and I feel like im slowly being pushed out. Hybrids come in and no one in the shop has the tools or knowledge to work on them. I feel once our shop owner starts seeing more and more money lost from turning these vehicles away he will go with the option of hiring a person specialized in this area insted of sending us to hybrid class.

Im mad, I want to be the top tech, I was once the tech that other shops sent their problem cars to, I was once on a hot streak of diagnosing anything that came into the shop. Now im the guy on the other end who has his head down and is sending away these cars on a weekly basis.

When I was a service manager and needed a oil change and tire bitch I hired the guy who showed he was the most motivated to land the job and actually wanted to be there . I dont care how many ase certs you have or what school you went to. Show me you can change oil and tires without me holding your hand and your in at minimum wage no overtime and bare minimum benefits. This is reality. Welcome to entry level.

So to answer your question certs and education may help. But experience is what gets people hired.

And I call bs on anyone can change parts. Lube techs arent changing head gaskets. There is alot of cars out there that even the seasoned techs dont want to change parts on or dont have the skills to do it…example im not touching a ferrari clutch…I mean all it is changing parts right?

I cant wait until you recent grads start wrenching and get that huge reality check I bet 80 percent of you change careers once you realize that tech school told you a bunch of bs to get you to drop 25k on their 9 month program. Their scam artists and dont set you up for the real auto repair world.

Just another way for ase to make money. No master techs are going to bother with this certification. Its ment for the entry level goober, and the jiffy lube scrubs.

If I am flat rate i’m doing nothing but suspension and steering repairs because to me thats the money maker, Hourly Im doing electrical and drivability in which I will not touch if im paid flat rate… I have one hour to chase down a wire and it takes me three…. na im good, give me that ball joint job.
