I drove the truck over to a buddy of mine who is general mechanic as well as a transmission rebuilder. He put helicoils in each of the three stripped holes, and leak is fixed and all is well. Turned out I didn’t have to pay anything out of pocket. He took my core transmission in exchange for the parts and labor.

Again, thanks to you guys on the ETCG website, THE place to go for help with your ride!

Thanks, guys, I have decided to hire a mechanic to heli-coil those holes. I am concerned if I try (having never done it before) I’ll make the problem worse. But it was really helpful to get educated about the process, it helped me secure help faster. ~ Pop

My famiy and I stayed at the Motel 6 in Sharonville a couple years ago during a visit to the area. It was nothing special but it was inexpensive and comfortable.

Realized I never posted an update. Bought the pressure test kit as Eric advised. I am glad I did, as leak wasn’t from the waterpump at all. At was from where the hose connects to the upper part of the radiator. EASY fix! I have since used said pressure test kit to quickly diagnose problems on a couple of my other cars.

                              THANKS GUYS!

My son and I swapped the steering box over the weekend. Not too bad a job. Discovered that, though I love Harbor Freight, their combination wrenches might not be the best. The bolts that hold the steering box to the frame are 21mm, but I had to use a hammer to pound the HF 21mm wrench on to the head of the bolts. Weird. Might not have been manufactured to the most exacting specifications.

Also was amazed at the high CORE charge for the unit. $286.00 at Carquest, even though the part itself was 149.99. I avoided the CORE charge by bringing in the old part when picking up the new (rebuilt) one. I like to do that anyway, it allows me to very carefully match the part up visually to make sure the new part is an exact match.

The steering definitely feels “tight and right” now.

Thanks, guys, for the input, and thanks, Eric, for the forum!
