Yes, oil can leak into the cooling system but that does not mean coolant will necessarily simultaneously leak into the oil. For example, if you have an oil cooler inside your radiator and that starts to leak, you will find oil in coolant but not necessarily any coolant in oil. This happened to me recently on my ’94 Suburban.

There might be no other symptoms at first. This warrants further investigation, because if oil is fgetting into your cooliung system, it needs to be fixed and pronto.

I now have a question on reassembly. I know what to do on everything except for the parts in the pictures below. I was not paying attention when the assembly including the parts I’ve drawn arrows to came apart. How does this go back together, specifically how is the metal rod to be oriented with respect too the plastic part that is hanging from it? How can I test it to be sure it is correct before continuing reassembly of the rest of the steering column?

Wow. That makes a LOT more sense to do it that way. I’ll remember that for next time. Thanks!

Got it. I could not feed the rectangular socket through the steering column too save my life. So I cut the wires, fed the cut ends through, then spliced the cut ends back to the socket.

Update: I was able to pull it back out so I can start over. So I think what I will try is tie some semi-stiff wire around the rectangular socket, fish the wire down through the steering column, and then pull the socket and wire loom down through. Hopefully that will work.

Grinding the glop off the pulleys with a wire cup on a drill worked great.

                        Thank you!

The pulleys are metal. I will try the wire wheel and report back my results. Thank you!
