You said this, “Apparently these machines have a long-standing reputation for dependability and low maintenance costs. I’m attracted to the Corolla primarily on this alone.”
Then, I think you should go with Corolla.
$400 delivered is an awesome deal.
I’m just curious, when you do automatic-manual swap with two same cars, do you have to swap the engine too? or just the transmission?
Eric, why not get a waste oil burner and use the waste oil to heat your garage in the winter AND make a video about it for us?
Another cool machine and loved the video as always. First time seeing a drum machined–often wondered how but never actually seen it done until now.
BTY, I do understand the rear drum brakes are perfectly good enough for most cars and keep the cost down, and they are the two main reasons we still see disk+drum brake setup on new cars today. However, I am curious how much do we the consumer save? Is the difference significant amount of money between all disc vs. disk+drum in terms of both the new car window price and the maintenance/repair cost?

You’re lucky that your premium is still good old 93. In California, the premium is only 91 nowadays. However, the premium is only 20 cents more than the 87 regular. (89 plus is 10 cents more than 87 regular) At least that’s how the gas prices are at local Costcos where I fill my car exclusively.
2012 Honda Odyssey is a very good choice. But, Eric bought the dealer certified pre-owned one which is significantly more expensive than a non-cpo 2012 Odyssey.
When a used car has less than 60k miles, Hondas are practically still new cars and very less likely to have problems. Even if it does, Eric has all the skills and tools and time to fix it right at his own shop. So, instead of paying more $$$$ for dealer certified pre-owned, why not just buy a regular used 2012 Honda Odyssey in good condition and save money?
I see him as more like an actor who makes a living making YouTube videos rather than a true car mechanic who tries to share his skills and teach the viewers. If he can’t make videos on car repairs anymore, he’ll have no problem making videos on any other subject (i.e. gardening) because he’s just more of an actor.
I am currently driving a 15-year-old German car and I’d need a reliable Japanese car as my second option. An used Lexus or Acura.
Hi Eric,
I’m a newbie but watching 30-40 of your YouTube videos all in this week made me feel I already know you pretty well and I consider you my friend.
I know you said you’re putting a new a/c system in your Fairmont and I have a question for you. Can you install cabin air-filter in older cars like your Fairmont? Would it be a very difficult job to create a whole new cabin air-filter system (i.e. air tubes and the cradle for the filter) so that you can stick a filter under the dash? I am really curious about that.
