This is the truck’s exhaust after a few minutes of idling. Notice how it’s sputtering.

This is the truck idling after a minute or two after startup. Notice the offending sound has faded completely. Forgive the poor quality videos.

Update: Switched back to SAE oil and added a quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer. The smoking stopped immediately. Thanks again.
It was indeed the fuel pump. Tricky buggers. In my experience, when fuel pumps went bad they just stopped working all together. Now I know, a pressure gauge is necessary kit for the tool box. Thank you all.
Well the fuel pump was pumping, just not enough it seems. I was getting around 50lbs pressure, but it should be more like 60-65. So we’ll change that out and see what it gets us. Thank you all for your input!
Yes, his fuel gauge has been working erratically for a long time. It will read “full” until the tank nears empty (he thinks), then the gauge will jump from empty to full sporadically.
My brother’s Blazer is the S10 Blazer. Is this process the same? I thought the fuel filters were inside the tank on these models.
September 3, 2014 at 8:10 pm in reply to: 1994 Ford Ranger Feels Like Misfiring in High Gear #618015I’m aware that changing the transmission fluid after a long time can be harmful. Sadly, my uncle was not. He had it done last year. When I had the truck, I had no idea how long it had been so I left it alone. I have tried putting the transmission in “D” and driving like that. It doesn’t seem to stutter at all, but I have only driven it up moderate hills in D. Though before doing the tune up, it DID start to stutter in 3rd gear. Afterward, I couldn’t feel it. I’ll try your test and get back to you.

September 3, 2014 at 9:43 am in reply to: 1994 Ford Ranger Feels Like Misfiring in High Gear #617963Thanks for the quick reply Eric. When I first encountered this problem I feared it was a transmission issue. Then someone recommended trying the tune up that I mentioned above. As I said the condition DID improve, so I was hoping maybe I was on the right track, but still missing something. I’ll continue to dig into it as time allows and update this post with any new info. Thanks again!
