I had a P0420 on my 2000 4Runner. Removed the CAT and made sure the sub-strait was intact, then back flowed the CAT with solvent and water. Much better now no codes!!
Hi all, my first post!
I own a 1998 Chevy Lumina with 3.1LFirst a little history. I’m driving along and I get check engine light, I use my scan tool and I get P0401 EGR code. I clean out my throttle body and EGR and the check engine light clears itself! Cool, I say!
A couple of weeks later, I’m driving along and the check engine light sparks on again! I run my scan tool and now I get P0420 code…
So I got online and found The Eric The Car Guy vid on diagnosing P0420.I followed the vids instructions and this is what I got…
1. When I run my infrared temp gun I get 288 on the front and 497 on the back.
2. On my live data it looks like the downstream sensor is changing rapidly like the upstream one.
Now my question: Since the temps looked good and the data scan was bad, do you think it might be the downstream sensor?
Talk to Honda Corp. and your dealership, since you haven’t changed your timing belt yet that area shouldn’t be leaking yet, with that mileage. You might be surprised how much they will work with you on this expensive matter.
2003 Honda Pilot 95,000 miles. I have been using synthetic oil since it was new. Now I have a oil leak (rear main). If I would change back to conventional oil do you think it may slow or even stop?
I had that same code on my 2000 4Runner. took the Cat down and back flowed it with solvent and a water hose, then dried it well. Runs better now! Made sure the sub strait is intact! 😉

I wanted to update this discussion on my catalytic converter, in that, my unorthodox procedure has kept the P0420 code away. The idle is much better, and the overall performance from the engine has improved. I hope this helps anyone with this expensive problem banana: .

I dropped the Catalytic Converter, only being able to view the rear end of the converter. It looked intact. I sprayed brake cleaner going from rear to front, washed/ rinsed it very well with a carbon remover solution, then heat dried the assembly. Going to run her for the week and see how this turns out. 😉

I’ll be dropping the Cat this weekend to inspect the inside for integrity. If I can clean it first, then maybe gain a little more time from her.
There is a VERY specific set of circumstances to get that monitor to run. It can be forced to run, but only with a Honda scanner. As pointed out, if you have a fault with the EVAP system the monitor may never run and it may set a code at some point.
You might consider taking it to your Honda dealer to have them run the monitor.
