Same thing happened to my ’98 Grand Cherokee as happened to Petej – the rattling was caused by a failing catalytic converter. That said, it wasn’t a “rumbling” that I could feel as the OP describes, so… your mileage may vary.
Mine is so badly broken up that you can feel it inside from the passenger seat (Driver only picks up the noise though) . It’s hard to describe, but it does transfer some vibration to inside the cab.
The Catalytic Converter in my 1996 Cherokee is failing. This results in rattling on startup until it warms enough for the honeycomb to expand and stop the rattle against the case.
This may be your problem as well.

What are the years where you would consider swapping the OEM dexcool for regular green antifreeze?
Any year…. Dex-cool is the worst to use IMHO.

Thanks for the update with the fix.
You may want to change the traffic light on your thread to green so it updates our database and will possibly help someone else out with the same issue C8-)
There you go! Should be green now. Thank you for letting me know that. I’m sure that the info will help. 🙂
Sorry I haven’t updated this in a while. I have a new career now and have been very, very busy the last several weeks.
I did get the truck fixed, turns out it was the upper radiator hose had a split and the coolant was running down the valve cover (top edge, closest to the manifold) and down to the back of the head. Also the Temp guage sending unit had died and needed replacing….
So yeah, it’s fixed now and is back in service.
Thank you all for your advice and help.
I’ve seen Scotty’s videos… There is some useful info, but I find Eric’s to be much more informative! Everybody takes on a sponsor at some point, lets just keep the content up too snuff.
Driveshaft only….
You may be able to clean the contacts in the Position sensor in the motor and get it to work again. I’ve seen videos on youtube on how to repair them , however now I must not know the secret code words to get them to come up again…..
Somebody beat me to the puch with the regular heater hose….. 🙂
Still haven’t had the time to work on it. I had to appear in court this week and need to appear again next week and the week after. All the while I am working too. I had some emergency calls the last couple days, so time got limited….
I will get the job done, but getting custody of my kids and getting this divorce crap done take priority.
I did get a mirror in and it does appear to be the intake gasket, so now that I have found the leak, I can tackle it once I finally have the time…..
I also got some of my tools up here, which helps me greatly.
It’s got the green kitten killing fluid in it…. Thankfully. I hate Death-cool. I refill it with distilled water or premix coolant only. I’ve had to flush and repair WAY too many systems that people have screwed up over the years.
I never got a chance to look at it again like I thought. I can use the tools at work, which is good. 🙂 Now, to find the time…
Looks to be easy to do as well. which is great for me!

Cool, I have a 87 B-2000 extra cab right now. lol
I got it for $10 bucks.. yes $10 bucks, it was sitting it the woods for like 4years.
When i pulled her out it just needed a new battery and some good gas and she fired right up, the brakes were shot i had to replace everything brake related.
I don’t use the truck much but it’s really nice just to have.
I love old mazdas, their built great. This one had been thru an accident with a deer sometime before I got it. The work to restore the cab was shoddy at best. I did my best to mend the truck and give it some much needed love. This one stuck out of all the vehicles I have ever owned. New carb, new tires, new rims, tons of work on the body alone. A fun truck over all. 🙂 The Weber carb gave it some oomph that it sorely needed. Made it much more fun to drive. The frame was square, but the body needed help. Had my son not entered this world (which would have been a shame) I would still have the truck. Mostly likely with a new cab and bed sides….

^ Your absolutely right, I got mine switched to regular green antifreeze instead of the dex cool which I believe is red. Dex cool turns acidic pretty quickly plus the plastic gaskets= big time sucks.
I got a quick look at it today after my court date was over…
Luckily no Dexcool in this one! Woohoo! The spider will be checked too. I do have a slight miss at idle, but I don’t hear any vacuum leaks…. I’ll dig out the stethoscope and have a listen…..
It is definitely at the back of the engine, Driver side where the leak is. I’ll have another go at it tomorrow after get free for the day. It’s not big, but since it dribbles on the exhaust crossover, it creates a bit of steam….
Question Posted!
Link is dead…
Next time I’m at the parts store, I’ll be picking up a leak detector kit. I can drive it, but I’m refilling the expansion tank everyday. 🙁 I’d rather not drive with a leak, just in case it goes completely…
Freeze plugs on these are a PITA to get too…..
Thanks guys! As soon as my child custody case is over and the restraining order put into effect tomorrow, I’ll have a look at it. Unfortunately I happened to look in the tool bag I brought with me when I moved….. Not impressed by what i found. Helluva time to be without my rollaway…..(It’s in storage). The good news is, I may be able too use the tools at work. So we shall see….
