When I was working on it the other day, I had a real good inspection of the wheel bearing. With the car on jackstands, I gave the wheels a real good shake fore/aft & up/down and didn’t notice any play at all.

I will definitely look at the brakes again, but as I was out for a drive last night while sitting in the back, the noise definitely seemed to be coming from where the shock attaches to the body. It won’t do it over perfectly smooth road but if you hit some rough spots you’ll hear it. The noise is very random sounding and seems to follow the shake of the car.

Well that stupid noise returned today……

I did not hear it all yesterday while we had the car out. Thought I had fixed it for sure. Anyways it’s clunking away worse than ever now…….not only when you brake but almost all the time.

I actually got in the back seat and had my wife drive the car for a bit just so I can sort of try to pinpoint it as best as possible. I believe it is coming from the shock absorber mount at the top. Honestly though, I had that shock completely off the car yesterday and everything looked fine with it. As you can see from the attached picture, there is very little to this system. I wonder if that nut at the top may be loose?

          Thanks for the info folks……

I took both the rear brakes apart today and re-inspected. What I did notice was that they were definitely out of adjustment. You could take the rear drums by hand and give em a good spin and they would freewheel like mad. I re-adjusted both of them, using one of Erics fantastic drum brake videos as a rough guide,

I also removed both shock absorbers and inspected the mounts, everything seemed fine there. Had a good look at the springs as well, everything looked pretty good.

I re-installed everything and torqued it all down to spec (see HMAservice website (http://www.hmaservice.com)…….awesome for Hyundai owners). I then took the car out for a good test drive and the sound appears to be gone. I think Eric is on to something, I think it was in the brakes being out of adjustment but I cannot figure out what would have caused it and how adjusting them fixed it.

Anyways, the pedal feel is much better now as well. There was definitely way too much pedal travel before today.
