Here is an update on my C280: I changed the water pump, belts and hoses and flushed out antifreeze with new. The water pump was a pain. I should have changed the thermostat a year ago. The car was running at 90C to 95C and now runs at 82C. I had to drill out a hex screw to get the pump off…I rounded it by not going in straight. I plan to change the brake fluid and transmission fluid next. Thinking about buying a prssure bleader from Motive (I think that is right). The tranny fluid calls for DEX II. I plan to use Valvoline Max life which is approve by Mercedes. For some reason Mercedes dealers look down on people who work on their own Mercedes. It is fun fixing things myself…Mercedes wanted $2000 to do what I did for $250….however it did take about 16 hours and the car was out of use for two weeks. I could do it now in about 6 hours. FYI..as I get older I find I work best when I watch TV and work on the car during commercials. Dave

          Quick update

          • Got a bad dash dimmer switch, shorted out the back and red wire and have dash lights now…may or may not replace it…may get one at junkyard.
          • Radio…my lighter was shorted out from the hot coil falling apart…blew out all the stuff and now antenna motor works and more lights come on radio, radio still does not work decided to replace it with a cd player…it was making popping sounds before it went out…the caps on the output transistors are probably leaking and shorting out
          • Cruise does not work if the speedometer is working or not, not sure if VSS can be cleaned anyway down to the speedometer and cruise

I had similar problems with my 89 accord with carb. Ended up donating to charity, however there are carbs you can buy that do not require all of the hoses. There are guys in California that run with these type of carbs and then switch back when they go in for a smog test. Where I live we do not test for smog or have to pass a pollution test. It is probably illegal now, the carb I looked at was a Holley I believe…around $150 or so. That was back about 10 years ago.

I released myself from the clutches of my couch and worked on my electrical problems some.

              • First off I had a bad bulb in the dome light
              • bought one of those little test lights to check for voltage with light bulb that lights up.
              • Found my electrical schematic and repair manual, one I downloaded several years ago
              • Need to get a can of contact cleaner/de-oxidizer and some dielectric silicone
              • I think my order of fixing will be as follows, if and when I repair I will report back, if I get stumped I will ask for help:
              1. get radio to work….no sound…..works about once a year
              2. fix speedometer
              3. fix dash lights
              4. fix crusie control
              5. fix digital clock

I have used the parts geek. For used parts I have used a place in Connecticut http://tomsforeign.com. I got a used distributor with control module for $75 delivered a few years ago. I find that autozone and advance will match the price from their internet specials..you pay tax but no freight cost.

Hi Uncle Buck…I have the same issue, done lots of research, however the couch has had a strong grip on me lately. You have inspired me as has this website to fight slugdom and get dirty. I will let you know how I fixed mine and what all I did…first I will pull the code…then start do some voltage checks. I have been to the Honda forums a lot in the past ..this seems to be a very very common Honda Accord problem. I have heard of solutions ranging from a circuit board on the speedometer , bad VSS, fuze, and bad dash dimmer switch.
