I understand that I don’t know more than the electrical engineers that helped to build my car. However, I do believe that there is a price/performance ratio that many companies use to keep costs down, leaving room for improvement (if you spend the money). Also, I don’t see the harm in using a larger gauge of wire, as long as it won’t catch on fire from heat or otherwise impair function of the other parts of the vehicle.
One of the reasons why I want to do this is because my ground wires are getting pretty decrepit. The Arizona heat has baked them to death, and I don’t think they’re nearly as good as they used to be. Therefore, I want to replace them with something better.
Second, with my aftermarket accessories, I feel that the upgraded wiring will help ease the electrical system strain when I play music or use a few accessories at a time. I have been experiencing voltage drop and dimming headlights when the music gets loud. Many car audio enthusiasts do this, albeit with systems vastly more powerful than mine.
I would try and wire things up closer to the way that it came from the factory (alternator -> fusebox -> battery), but after looking at the fusebox it looks like a nightmare. It seems a lot easier to run a parallel wire to the battery.
