try cleaning the mass air flow sensor, a dirty sensor can give you the symptoms you have.

Yeah, probably valve timing issue weak or broken springs or a lubrication/stuck valves issue, have you pulled the valve cover yet to see if anything looks wonky, maybe bar the engine over by hand to see if all is smooth.

Dang, this is a tricky one…firing order? bad air/fuel mix on the front carb, valve timing but the last 3 cyls are in time.
I would try to check firing order and maybe swap carbs from fron to back if you can.

Is this a stick tranny? I had a crank sensor go on one of these the sensor is by the bell housing ,if it cant read the engine turning it wont send fire to the coil.

sounds like your on your way,a good basic tune up plugs cap&rotor and wires,if you still have a miss start checking for a vacuume leak as a vac leak ccam mimmick a ignition missfire.
I have had some vortec engines that missfire on anything except acDELCO parts ,my two 5.7 vans wont fire right without delco cap&rotors in them…good luck!

I have heard that also, something about alternator getting too hot as it tries to charge a low/dead battery…it is best to get a dead low battery on a charger as soon as you are able to.
