that year bronco I think had a 2.8 with solid lifters and adjustable valves,they could be quite noisy.

good luck.one thing on these years chevys that can change timing intermittant and cause a binding hard start sometimes and not throw a code is the crank sensor,I have 2 chevy 5.7 and 2 4.3 chevys that became hard starting,the sensors corrected the problem.took me a bunch of diagnostic time to figure it out.
There is a tech bulletin in shimming the sensor ,they get loose and back out of the bore or worse they rub against the crank sensor wheel. napa# MPE CSS212SB should do the trick.

I agree on the idea,I worked in the airline industry and we rebuilt tugs and de-ice and fueling trucks
many times over,you do get some really weird things happen on super high mileage or high hour vehicles,strange symptoms on electrical and chassis issues.
