Nightflyr : thanks for the reply and the info. I’ll give this a try
Thanks again
ALThanks for this information I’ll have a look at the speedometer module soldering. I’ll get my Wife to solder it she’s
IPC certified so she’ll know what has to be re flowed.
Yeah, live and learn, a guy at the garage told me it more than likely was the VSS after he took it for a drive.
I had read previous where the instrument cluster on these rigs go out quite often.Once again thanks for all your help and steering me to that module.
Al
Got the plastic gear, put the sensor in the truck and still no speedometer needle moving.
Any ideas or suggestions on what could it be ?
Yes I looked at it last night and it does have a groove for a lock ring to secure that plastic pinion gear on
Thanks
It won’t let me load the drawing
I found this on Nissan USA parts site. Appears that plastic pinion gear does have to be installed on the end.
Thanks for all your input
Al
No it’s the original tranny, I bought the truck new in 98. The 2nd pick is not the exact one in the truck, I just used that pic as a reference to the plastic gear on the end.
I think you may be correct, maybe the plastic gear on the present one needs to be put on the tranny end blade type. The sensor in the truck appears to have what looks like a lock ring on the very end of the shaft.
I’ll have to take it out again tomorrow and see if that plastic gear assembly can be removed. Thanks
AlOkay, went to Autozone and got the speed sensor for my truck. When I took the one in the truck out it looks nowhere near what they gave me. It has a red plastic gear on the end inside the tranny while the one they gave me has a blade on it.
Does anybody know if this is a substitute / improvement for the gear end sensor in the truck up and this blade type work.
AutoZone says it’s the correct speed sensor for my 98 Frontier 4WD manual tranny.thanks
AL
dtidman:
Thank you for that link, from looking at that I know exactly where the VSS is located now.
Once again thanks so much that solves my problem. Also thanks to college man for replying and
assisting meAl
Still can’t see anything on the rear bottom left of tranny. My tranny is a 5 speed manual, could it be located on the right side
Thank you, I’ll have another look hopefully I can spot it. Spent an hr under there yesterday, couldn’t find any wires/ connectors running from the bottom left side. It has to be there somewhere and I’m missing it.
Thanks for the assistance
Went to the link you sent me, followed the advice but still can’t locate that dang vehicle speed sensor on my 98 Nissan Frontier 4WD XE manual tranny
I can’t see any sensors on the left side. When stating left side do they mean in that link left as sitting behind the wheel.Any more assistance you can give on locating this thing would be appreciated
Thanks
college man:
